Ganderbal : The Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, inaugurated a one-week training program titled “Evaluating Seedling Growth and Survival in Silviculture Nursery Training Initiatives” at Pakhton Basti, Watlar Ganderbal. The program, scheduled from December 20 to 26, 2024, aims to promote women’s participation in establishing nurseries of economically significant tree species, contributing to socio-economic upliftment and sustainable development.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. G.M. Bhat, who delivered the welcome address. Prof. Bhat highlighted the pivotal role of women in achieving sustainable development goals and emphasized how women can utilize existing resources to enhance their economic prospects.
Dr. Megna Rashid, Assistant Professor and training coordinator, outlined the objectives of the program. She stressed the importance of hands-on training in nursery practices, equipping participants with practical skills and knowledge to ensure effective tree cultivation. She further emphasized that the program empowers women with the tools and confidence to actively engage in sustainable forestry management and community development.
Dr. M. Maqbool Rather provided a comprehensive overview of the training program, focusing on the significance of entrepreneurship in fostering self-sustaining livelihoods.
This initiative is expected to make a substantial impact on the socio-economic status of women in rural areas, encouraging their active involvement in silvicultural practices. The Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, remains committed to empowering women and contributing to sustainable development through such meaningful programs.
In her concluding remarks, Dr. Megna Rashid Bakshi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. N.A. Ganie, Director of Planning and Monitoring, Prof. H.R. Naik, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. S.A. Gangoo, and Head of the Division, Prof. G.M. Bhat, for their unwavering support. She also acknowledged the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, for sponsoring this initiative.
The training program represents a significant step towards empowering women and promoting sustainable agroforestry practices in the region.
