The Indian Army has played a transformative role in peace-building in Kashmir, blending counter-terrorism efforts with humanitarian initiatives. Through education, healthcare, and community engagement, it has won the trust of Kashmiris and fostered hope for a harmonious future.
It is the worst fact in the history of the conflict that the common people of Kashmir were not told the real story of the Indian Army’s existence in Kashmir. The sad part of the story is that, instead of explaining the role of the Indian Army in Kashmir, extremists from the neighbouring country have used religion as a tool to radicalize the people of Kashmir. They not only spread hate among the youth but also propagate false narratives against the Indian Army over the last three decades.
Our younger generations must know the history, which is enduring and always serves as a lesson to learn and implement for the peace and prosperity of Kashmir. They have been misguided and exploited for broader interests. The Army did not enter Kashmir by force; it was invited by the people of Kashmir when raiders from Pakistan invaded the region in 1947, committing atrocities such as looting, rape, and the killing of innocents. When the common people grew fed up with the behaviour of the raiders, they began agitating and appealing to the then-authorities. With the proper consent of the then-leader Sheikh Abdullah and Maharaja Hari Singh, the Indian Army was invited to save Kashmir from victimization. The people of Kashmir warmly welcomed the Indian Army with songs and flowers, and since then, the Army has been safeguarding, securing, and providing a peaceful environment in Kashmir amidst terrorism.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I witnessed some of the valley’s most challenging phases of unrest in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2016. These were times when the very fabric of normalcy seemed irreparably torn. Yet, even in those darkest moments, the Indian Army’s relentless efforts offered a glimmer of relief and hope. Their initiatives went beyond just restoring order; they laid the groundwork for reconciliation and trust-building. However, peace-building in Kashmir has never been a one-sided endeavour. The civilian population, with its aspirations for harmony and progress, has walked hand-in-hand with the Army. Together, they have demonstrated that the spirit of collaboration and resilience can overcome even the gravest challenges, paving the way for a more peaceful and hopeful future.
Operation Sadbhavana: A Beacon of Hope in Kashmir:
The initiative of Operation Sadbhavana has been pivotal in fostering peace and stability in the valley. Launched in 1998 to support those affected by terrorism, it has profoundly impacted the lives of Kashmiris. Among its most transformative efforts are the Goodwill Schools, established to provide quality education to underprivileged children. These schools have not only empowered students with knowledge but also shielded them from falling prey to radical ideologies. Furthermore, these schools have generated employment opportunities for local residents across various sectors, reinforcing economic stability and reducing vulnerability to radicalization. The educational support and sponsorships offered by the Indian Army have become a lifeline for many, instilling hope in a region often fraught with volatility. Beyond education, Operation Sadbhavana has extended its impact through free medical camps, sponsored tours, sports events, cultural programs, youth engagement initiatives, and de-radicalization seminars. Each of these efforts is carefully designed to uplift the community, particularly the youth, steering them away from paths of extremism and toward constructive pursuits. These multifaceted programs have played a significant role in Kashmir’s journey toward peace and harmony, proving that sustainable development and trust-building can transform even the most challenging landscapes.
Counter-Terrorism Policy: A Pillar of Peace-Building in Kashmir:
The Indian Army’s counter-terrorism policy in Kashmir has been a cornerstone of its peace-building efforts. Operating under the dual objective of neutralizing terrorist threats and minimizing collateral damage, the Army has consistently adapted its strategies to the evolving dynamics of insurgency in the region. At the heart of this policy lies a people-centric approach. Through surgical operations, intelligence-based interventions, and enhanced coordination with local law enforcement agencies, the Army has successfully dismantled terrorist networks. Simultaneously, it has ensured the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire. An essential aspect of the counter-terrorism framework is its focus on deradicalization. By engaging with vulnerable youth and providing them with opportunities for education, employment, and skill development, the Army aims to address the root causes of militancy. Community outreach programs, including village interactions and awareness campaigns, have further strengthened the bond between the Army and the local population. This balanced approach—combining military precision with a humanitarian vision—has significantly contributed to reducing the influence of terrorism in Kashmir. It serves as an indication to the Army’s commitment to restoring peace while respecting the aspirations and dignity of the people it protects.
Army as a Helping Hand in Tough Times:
The Indian Army’s role as a helping hand during challenging situations has instilled renewed hope in the hearts of common Kashmiris. In remote and hilly regions like Gurez, Machhil, Teetwal, and Keran, where harsh winters often bring over 10 feet of snowfall, road blockages are a regular ordeal. In such circumstances, the Army’s humanitarian efforts shine through, particularly in airlifting emergency patients using chartered medical air buses. These timely interventions have saved countless lives and earned immense gratitude from the local communities. This compassionate approach has not only alleviated suffering but also fostered a positive narrative among the people. By consistently standing by Kashmiris in their moments of need, the Army has strengthened its bond with the region. These efforts have inspired many to join hands with the Army in its mission to uproot terrorism and restore lasting peace in Kashmir.
As the valley continues its journey toward peace, the Indian Army’s contributions stand as a testament to the power of persistence and compassion. Beyond its role as a security force, the Army has emerged as a symbol of resilience, bridging divides and nurturing aspirations in the face of adversity. The stories of transformed lives, the smiles of children educated in Goodwill Schools, and the gratefulness of families saved in emergencies paint a vivid picture of hope. Yet, the road to enduring peace is a shared responsibility. It calls upon every Kashmiri to rise above the scars of the past and embrace a future shaped by unity and mutual trust. The Army’s efforts are a powerful foundation, but the true architects of peace will always be the people of Kashmir—resilient, hopeful, and determined to rewrite their destiny.
