Kashi, which is famously known as Varanasi or Banaras is one of the oldest city in the world and holds immense historical, spiritual, and cultural significance in India. It is located in the mid gangatic valley in the southeastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh, on the left bank of the River Ganga. This city is famous by the name “Shiv-ki-Nagri” or “The city of Lord Shiva”. Kashi is the outline of the Indian heritage. Varanasi is often described as older than history and tradition and also described as the Spiritual and Cultural hub. According to Mark Twain, “Kashi is Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend”.
Over the past few years, The Indian Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narinder Modi has taken up various initiatives to develop Kashi. In this regard, Prime Minister Narinder Modi has launched “Kashi Vikas Yatra” a revolutionary program designed to make Kashi a Model of Development for the whole country. This transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing and modernizing Varanasi while preserving its ancient nature. The Kashi Vikas Yatra has brought tremendous change in Varanasi, while keeping the modernization aspect in line with its ancient cultural heritage. This overall project has rebuilt the infrastructure of the city, brought tourists, and made Varanasi a world spiritual hub. For the future, the emphasis is still on sustainable development that ensures that the growth benefits all sections of society while keeping the city’s unique cultural identity intact.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India since 2014 has been actively participating in the Kashi Vikas Yatra as the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. In December 2021, he inaugurated the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project which, like other flagship projects under the Kashi Vikas Yatra, aims at improving the Kashi Vishwanath temple and its surroundings. The corridor not only enhanced the area’s accessibility and facilities for the pilgrims, modern conveniences were also blended with traditional architecture. The luxurious infrastructure has improved the experience of visitors and demonstrated how spirituality and heritage can merge with the tangible world around them.
Cleaning and Namami the Ganga also feeds into the Kashi Vikas Yarty’s objectives, including the cleansing and maintenance of the Ganga River that is a religious symbol for majority of Hindus. The implementation of modern sewage systems to several manifolds, including Manikarnika Ghat has increased the cleanliness of the ghats. The river, which is of utmost importance to the people and religion of Varanasi, has undergone replenishment due to all of these efforts. Furthermore, with the integration of Varanasi in the Smart Cities Mission of India, modern solar street lights, Wi-Fi, and advanced traffic control systems have been incorporated into the city. Such upgrades and investments help residents and visitors, improving the overall livability of the city without destroying its charm.
Tremendous emphasis has also been placed on cultural retention during the Kashi Vikas Yatra. Festivals such as Dev Deepawali are celebrated with much more enthusiasm than before, alongside traditional crafts like the Banarasi silk weaving, which in turn, helps in the local economy while ensuring that these crafts do not fade away into obscurity. In addition, the city has met international standards of infrastructural development. The airport is being upgraded and new railway lines are which is greatly improving the ease of travel for tourists coming to the city. This initiative called the Kashi Vikas Yatra is not just a development program, but rather a movement aimed at restoring the splendor endowed upon the city of Varanasi, arguably one of the oldest inhabited cities on earth. This is a classic case of development being pursued without sacrificing culture. Such initiatives must not only take place in Varanasi, but also in other historical cities in the country. Other prominent works include beautification of the Dashashwamedh-Godaulia quarter and construction of the Kashi-Raj Mandir road.
The improvement and renovation of facilities in the city has made its infrastructure visually appealing while making it welcoming to both its residents and tourists. Heritage walks linking Piplani Katra, Kabir Chaura, and Assi Ghat has made it easier for tourists to deeply explore the culture rich history of the city. Moreover, the beautification of the ghats has been helpful in preserving the sanctity of the river while making it cleaner and more environmentally friendly. The modernization of the ghats has greatly enhanced the experience of visiting the city to which tourists have increased for the region.
The Kashi Vikas Yatra has made significant development though it still faces issues which rely on more attention. Challenges pertaining to constant overpopulation, pollution, and the maintenance of sustainability approach for the Kashi Vikas Yatra will need to be managed in the long term. These problems are multilateral requiring the intervention of the government, the people, and other related groups. Essentially, the Kashi Vikas Yatra is a multi-sectoral plan rolling out development improvement on infrastructure, conservation, and enhancement of the living standards and experience of the people in the country and visitors. It seeks to achieve the Indian government’s goal to enhance and develop urban settings of culture-rich historical cities. By using these techniques, Varanasi evolves as a perfect confluence of modernity and tradition which is a live testimony to India’s dedication towards its cultural heritage.
