The recent road accident in Handwara has once again reminded us how dangerous our roads can be if safety rules are not followed. A simple journey turned into a tragedy, and many families are now suffering because of this. Accidents like these are happening too often in Kashmir, and it is time we all wake up and take road safety more seriously.

Reports say that the accident happened because of speeding and careless driving. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which then crashed and caused injuries and deaths. People who saw the accident said that the vehicle was going too fast, and the road condition was not very good. This is not the first time such an incident has happened in Handwara. In the past few years, the area has seen many road accidents, and many people have lost their lives.

There are many reasons behind these accidents. First, drivers are not always careful. They drive too fast, do not wear seat belts, talk on mobile phones. Second, many roads in the region are narrow and damaged. Sharp turns and poor road signs also make it difficult for drivers to be safe. Third, sometimes vehicles are not in good condition, and they fail on the road.

The government has built many roads and highways to connect even the far-off villages in Kashmir, which is a good thing. But building roads is not enough. Regular checks are needed to ensure the roads are safe to use. Broken roads, damaged safety barriers, and missing road signs can all lead to accidents. So it is the duty of the concerned departments to maintain the roads properly and fix the dangerous spots on time.

The Traffic Police also have a big role to play. They must ensure that drivers follow the rules. Speed checking, seat belt enforcement, and action against drunk driving must be made strict. The public should also understand that road rules are there to save lives, not to trouble them.

Awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and villages are important to teach young people about road safety. From wearing helmets and seat belts to following speed limits, these small actions can save many lives. Parents should also guide their children on this.

It is also important for the transport department to check vehicles regularly. Old and poorly maintained vehicles should not be allowed on the road. Many times we see overcrowded vehicles on hilly roads, which is very dangerous.

Lastly, the community must be alert. If someone sees rash driving or unsafe vehicles, they must inform the police. A little attention and care can prevent big tragedies.

The Handwara accident is a sad and painful reminder that we still have a long way to go to make our roads safe. Let this tragedy not go waste. Let the government, police, and public work together to make sure that no more lives are lost on the roads. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
