Kupwara : In a proactive effort to spread legal literacy and empower women, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Kupwara, under the guidance of Secretary DLSA Kupwara, organized a one-day legal awareness programme in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC) Kupwara. The theme of the event was “Protection of Women from Domestic Violence, Property Rights, and Workplace Discrimination.”
The programme was held on the college campus and saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, college staff, and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs). The initiative aimed to sensitize the youth and general public about the legal protections available to women under Indian law, and to encourage reporting and redressal of violations.
Advocate Nuzat, Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsel (LADC), delivered an insightful session on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, elaborating on the legal definitions, types of abuse, and procedures for seeking relief. She emphasized the role of protection officers, availability of shelter homes, and provisions for compensation under the Act.
Advocate Neelofar, Assistant LADC, focused on women’s property rights, especially under Hindu and Muslim personal laws, as well as constitutional guarantees ensuring equality. She also addressed the issue of gender-based discrimination at workplaces, citing real-life case studies and recent legal developments like the Vishaka Guidelines and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
The speakers encouraged open dialogue and answered questions raised by the students and staff, creating a highly interactive environment. They also emphasized the importance of awareness in breaking the cycle of silence and stigma around these issues.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from college authorities, who appreciated DLSA
