Srinagar : Students of My New School, Drugmulla, Kupwara, on Saturday participated in the Chinar Book Festival, a major literary and cultural event underway at the Sher-I-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.
The festival, organised by the National Book Trust, India in collaboration with the Srinagar District Administration and the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, has drawn book lovers and publishers from across the country.
Students from My New School explored a variety of books in multiple languages, interacted with authors, and attended sessions explaining the importance of reading and the cultural significance of the festival. They were also felicitated for their active participation.
“This was my first time at such a big book event,” said a Class 5th student. “I got to see books from all over India and even bought one by my favourite author. It has inspired me to read more.”
The Chinar Book Festival, now in its second edition, is a nine-day celebration of literature, art, and culture, set against the backdrop of Dal Lake and the Valley’s iconic chinar trees.
Featuring over 200–300 stalls and publishers from across India, the event offers storytelling sessions, poetry recitals, workshops, and cultural performances. Special exhibitions, including displays on the ancient Sharda script, highlight the Valley’s literary heritage.
Officials say the aim is to revive the habit of reading, especially among young people, while also promoting Kashmiri culture and regional languages.
The festival has become one of the Valley’s most prominent platforms for literary engagement and community participation.
