Kupwara : Kupwara is set to witness a major sporting milestone with the launch of the Gen Bipin Rawat Fencing Championship at the Vajr Fencing Node, Maidan-e-Azam, from October 3 to 5.
The event, organised by the Chinar Corps under the Sadbhavana project in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Fencing Association, brings together eight teams from across the region. It marks a significant step in promoting fencing in North Kashmir and aims to inspire local youth to embrace the sport.
The championship honours Late General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, remembered for his leadership and contribution to national integration.
The Vajr Fencing Node, opened earlier this year under the Khelo India movement and supported by CSR India, has quickly become a centre for fencing talent. After hosting its first official camp and district-level tournament in July-August, the facility is now preparing athletes for bigger platforms.
Organisers said the tournament will promote discipline, confidence, resilience and sportsmanship while providing young fencers with a competitive arena. Local supporters and sports enthusiasts have been invited to witness the matches and cheer for the participants.
