Srinagar: JioStar has recently acted against a Srinagar-based local cable operator “SEN” for serious broadcast piracy and unlawful carriage of foreign channels, leading to registration of an FIR and seizure of infringing equipment by the police. This action aligns with JioStar’s wider, publicly reported zero-tolerance strategy against piracy across multiple Indian states.
The local operator “SEN” in Srinagar, associated with major J&K MSO Take One JK Media Pvt. Ltd., was allegedly transmitting/retransmitting JioStar channels to its 50,000 subscribers without any authorization, amounting to broadcast piracy and causing significant loss of revenue to both the broadcaster and the government exchequer through evasion of lawful subscription and tax dues.
In addition to piracy of Indian pay channels, the operator was reportedly carrying restricted Pakistani channels, which raises a national security concern in line with broader government sensitivities about unauthorized foreign broadcasts into India.
Legal and enforcement action
Srinagar Police have registered FIR No. 63/2025 dated 07 December 2025 at Police Station Shaheed Gunj under relevant provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957 (as amended), mirroring similar anti-piracy FIRs that JioStar has successfully triggered in other states such as Rajasthan and Haryana.
Pursuant to the FIR, the police conducted a raid on the operator’s premises/control room and seized infringing equipment i:e consumer STBs used for illegal reception and redistribution of JioStar channels,
JioStar remains firmly committed to protecting intellectual property, supporting law enforcement, and ensuring that India’s broadcast environment remains secure, compliant, and fair for all stakeholders. The company will continue strengthening its ground-level intelligence, legal interventions, and industry collaborations to curb piracy in every form.
