New Delhi : India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth‑largest economy, according to the government’s end‑of‑year economic review. With an estimated GDP of US$4.18 trillion, India now ranks behind only the United States, China, and Germany, marking a significant milestone in the country’s economic journey.
The review highlighted that India continues to be among the fastest‑growing major economies globally, driven by strong domestic demand, sustained infrastructure spending, a resilient services sector, and steady manufacturing growth. The government expressed confidence that the current momentum can be maintained in the coming years.
Projections outlined in the report suggest that India is well‑positioned to displace Germany as the world’s third‑largest economy within the next two‑and‑a‑half to three years. By 2030, India’s GDP is expected to reach approximately US$7.3 trillion, reflecting both economic expansion and structural reforms.
The development underscores India’s growing influence in the global economy and strengthens its standing as a key driver of future growth. Economists note that continued policy stability, investment in infrastructure, and focus on innovation will be crucial in sustaining this upward trajectory as India moves closer to the top three global economies.
