Kupwara : In a major boost to winter sports in north Kashmir, the Indian Army organised a free ski training programme at Tee Pee Chokibal in Kupwara district. This is the first initiative of its kind in the area.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from local youth who have long aspired to learn skiing but lacked access and resources.
Officials said that 167 young participants attended the training session on February 9. On February 13, around 101 youth took part in the programme. Most participants were students from nearby villages who saw this as a rare opportunity to experience a winter sport that was earlier beyond their reach.
For years, young people from Kupwara had to travel to Gulmarg or Sonamarg to learn skiing. The cost of travel, equipment, and training made it difficult for many families. With this initiative, the Army brought trained instructors, equipment, and structured guidance directly to their home district.
The snow covered slopes of Tee Pee Chokibal proved suitable for beginners, who received lessons in basic techniques, balance, and safety measures.
Participants expressed joy and gratitude for the effort. Eiman Nayeem, a student, said she had always wanted to learn skiing but could not afford to travel outside Kupwara. She said the programme has given him hope to pursue the sport seriously.
Shazia Parveen, a Class 11 student, said this was her first time trying any winter sport and she felt excited and confident after learning the basics.
Abu dayem said they used to see skiing only on television and social media, but now they are experiencing it themselves. Danish Khan said such initiatives can help local youth build confidence and even consider careers in sports.
Locals and parents appreciated the effort, saying the programme has opened new doors for youth in the district and strengthened their interest in positive activities.
