Kupwara : In a significant judgment, the District Consumer Commission Kupwara has awarded compensation of ₹16,28,895 to local shopkeeper Ghulam Nabi Reshi, bringing to an end a legal battle that lasted nearly ten years.
The compensation cheque was handed over to Ghulam Nabi Reshi by the Consumer Commission Bench comprising President Peerzada Qousar Hussain and Member Nyla Yaseen.
According to details, Ghulam Nabi Reshi, proprietor of Fashion Footwear, suffered substantial losses after his shop was completely destroyed in a devastating fire several years ago. The establishment was insured through Oriental Bank with an insurance company. However, a dispute arose regarding the settlement of the insurance claim following the incident.
Seeking redressal, the aggrieved shopkeeper approached the then District Consumer Forum Kupwara in 2016 by filing a complaint under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act. After extensive hearings and prolonged legal proceedings spanning almost a decade, the Consumer Commission delivered its verdict in favour of the complainant and directed payment of compensation amounting to ₹16,28,895.
The judgment is being hailed as a landmark decision in the protection of consumer rights and is expected to serve as an important precedent in the resolution of consumer disputes.
Throughout the proceedings, the complainant was represented by Advocate Sheikh Abdul Majeed, Advocate Aadam Malik, and their legal team, who pursued the case until its successful conclusion.
The decision underscores the role of consumer commissions in ensuring justice and accountability, particularly in cases involving insurance claim disputes.
