New Delhi : Senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has taken charge as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier internal intelligence agency, succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka.
A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Dixit has been appointed for a two-year tenure after serving as Special Director in the IB. With more than three decades of experience in intelligence and policing, he is widely regarded as one of the country’s most experienced intelligence officers.
His appointment comes at a time when India continues to face evolving internal security challenges, including terrorism, cyber threats, espionage, radicalisation and cross-border infiltration. Officials believe his extensive experience will strengthen the agency’s operational capabilities and ensure continuity in its functioning.
Dixit has played a key role in intelligence operations in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during the period following the abrogation of Article 370. As head of the Intelligence Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, he supervised intelligence operations across Jammu & Kashmir and Leh while working closely with security agencies to maintain peace and counter terror threats.
During his tenure in Kashmir, he was instrumental in improving coordination among intelligence and security agencies, monitoring militant networks and supporting confidence-building initiatives. He is also credited with encouraging greater public participation in the democratic process across the region.
Known for his calm approach, strategic thinking and expertise in counter-terrorism and internal security, Dixit has handled several sensitive assignments during his distinguished career. His appointment as IB Director is expected to further strengthen India’s internal security framework.
As Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Dixit will lead the country’s principal internal intelligence agency responsible for gathering and analysing intelligence related to terrorism, extremism, espionage, cyber security and other threats to national security. His appointment reflects the government’s emphasis on experienced leadership to address the country’s evolving security challenges.
