For decades, Kashmir’s rivers and lakes were more than scenic landmarks. They served as important transport routes that connected towns, villages, markets, and communities. Boats carried people, vegetables, timber, and other goods across the Valley. As roads expanded and motor vehicles became the preferred choice, water transport slowly disappeared. Today, when traffic congestion, pollution, and fuel consumption have become major concerns, it is time to seriously consider bringing water transport back.
The Valley’s roads are under growing pressure. Every year, the number of vehicles increases while road space remains limited. Long traffic jams have become a daily experience in many areas. Commuters lose valuable time, businesses face delays, and emergency services often struggle to move quickly. Building more roads alone cannot solve this challenge. Kashmir needs a balanced transport system, and its natural waterways can become an important part of that solution.
The Jhelum River and several connected water channels already exist. With proper planning, safe jetties, modern passenger boats, and regular services, water transport can offer a practical alternative for thousands of commuters. Routes connecting Srinagar with nearby areas could reduce pressure on busy roads and provide people with another reliable mode of travel.
The environmental benefits are equally important. Fewer vehicles on roads mean lower fuel consumption, reduced carbon emissions, and improved air quality. Electric or low emission boats can further strengthen Kashmir’s efforts to protect its fragile ecosystem. Water transport also produces less noise than heavy road traffic, making it a cleaner and quieter option.
Reviving waterways can also boost tourism and local livelihoods. Visitors often seek authentic experiences, and regular river transport would allow them to explore Kashmir from a different perspective. Boat operators, craftsmen, maintenance workers, and small businesses around jetties could all benefit from new economic opportunities. Such a project would preserve a part of Kashmir’s cultural heritage while creating employment.
This vision requires investment, careful planning, and strict environmental safeguards. Waterways must be cleaned, navigation channels maintained, and passenger safety placed above everything else. Coordination among departments will be essential to ensure efficient operations without harming the river ecosystem.
Kashmir has been blessed with a natural transport network that many regions can only dream of. Instead of allowing it to remain underused, policymakers should see it as an opportunity to build a greener, safer, and more efficient future. Reviving water transport is not about replacing roads. It is about giving people more choices, reducing congestion, protecting the environment, and reconnecting Kashmir with a tradition that once shaped its identity.
