The use of minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery technique is increasing in rural hospitals of Kashmir as officials said hospitals have been equipped with better health facilities.
According to the official data, last year, over 30 thousand minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgeries were performed in rural hospitals. This year, the number has increased to over 50000, so far.
According to health officials, every year, the number of minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgeries is increasing.
“The trend of laparoscopic surgeries is increasing in the valley’s health sector. People don’t want to see scars on their bodies due to operations.
“The district hospitals are well equipped to perform such surgeries. There is a visible change in the rural health sector,” Dr Mir Mushtaq, Spokesperson Directorate of Health Services Kashmir told Rising Kashmir.
“We have upgraded the hospitals and provide all the necessary facilities in rural hospitals. All the laparoscopic surgeries have been performed by our doctors successfully. Patients also prefer minimal access surgeries for quick recovery,” he added.
Dr Mushtaq said that even minimally invasive knee replacements have also been performed at district hospitals.
Laparoscopic surgery or “band-aid” surgery is a technique in which operation in the abdomen is performed through tiny incisions rather than one large cut. The incisions allow surgeons to insert tiny surgical instruments that are guided by a tiny telescope attached to a camera, called a laparoscope.
According to the official data, hundreds of surgeries have been performed this year at SMHS hospital.
At Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial (JLNM) Hospital Srinagar, doctors perform over 60 minimally invasive surgeries in a month and more than 110 laparoscopic surgeries are being performed at SKIMS every month.
Pertinently, to upgrade the advanced surgical procedures for better patient care in peripheries, Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK) established a minimal access surgery unit at the JLNM Hospital.(RK)
