Among the core values of humanity is truthfulness which is an ethical, moral and human obligation. For a society to prosper and remain free from evils of different forms, it’s extremely important to adopt truthfulness. In the absence of truthfulness, a humane and ethical nature among people cannot be even imagined of. Islam mandates truthfulness and prohibits lies. The holy book of Allah on many occasions emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and how sinful it is to resort to lying. The Quran mentions O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in word and deeds). [al-Tawbah 9:119]The best of mankind, i.e. the Prophets among other attributes have truthfulness in common. From Adam to the last messenger of Allah, all the Prophets and messengers of God had been truthful throughout their lives. The people of Mecca, even before the revelation and Prophethood of the last messenger of Allah would laud his truthful character. The names ascribed to the Prophet because of his exemplary truthfulness were As-Saddiq and Al-Amin. The beloved Prophet in multiple narrations highlighted the importance of truth and mentioned that belief and lie cannot accumulate in a single heart. Abd-Allah ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: You must be truthful, for truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man will keep speaking the truth and striving to speak the truth until he will be recorded with Allah as a Siddeeq (speaker of the truth). Beware of telling lies, for lying leads to immorality and immorality leads to Hellfire. A man will keep telling lies and striving to tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar (Muslim). Lord, make us among the truthful and protect us from the disease of lying, deceit and falsification.
