In a great achievement, India has successfully organized the coveted G20 Summit in national capital Delhi. The 2-day Summit saw a confluence of top world leaders discussing the most pressing issues in contemporary times including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. During the Summit, the member nations adopted a declaration on the (Russia-Ukraine) conflict – condemning the “human suffering and adverse repercussions of the conflict in Ukraine on global food and energy security.” The member nations resolved that states cannot grab territory by force. The African Union or AU was formally made a permanent member of the Group par with the European Union – a measure expected to make the grouping more representative. The Summit also saw the member nations agreeing to pursue tripling renewable energy capacity globally by 2030 and accepted the need to phase-down unabated coal power. Among an important agreement, signed on the sidelines of the Summit; US, India, Saudi Arabia and the EU agreed on to build a new network of railways and shipping routes between the themselves – a measure designed to increase trade between South Asia, the Middle East and Europe and at the same time counter China’s project to build new global trading routes, the Belt and Road Initiative. All in all, the Delhi Summit and the overall Presidency stint of India has been hailed as a major success in the G20 history in general and for India in particular. Notably, India effectively amid much fanfare hosted the Group’s Third Tourism Working Group meeting, which was held from 22nd to 24th May 2023 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Succeeding India would be Brazil as Prime Minister Narenda Modi passed the gavel to Lula da Silva upcoming stint for presidency.
