Kashmir is poised to enter a new era of prosperity and stability. In August 2019, Government made a historic decision to revoke Article 370. This move was aimed at integrating the region more closely with India and opening up new opportunities for development. With the revocation of Article 370, the Indian government sought to bring peace and stability to Kashmir, while also addressing the long-standing issues of separatism and terrorism. The revocation of Article 370 was a significant step towards achieving these goals. It paved the way for the mainstreaming of Kashmir and the restoration of peace in the region. The Indian government’s hardline approach, coupled with a commitment to economic development, has set the stage for a brighter future for the people of Kashmir.
One of the key objectives of the Indian government’s approach to Kashmir is to reduce violence and militancy in the region. The deployment of additional troops and intensified surveillance has resulted in a decline in indiscriminate attacks and civilian casualties. The number of civilians killed in violence has returned to levels seen in the early 2010s, indicating a positive trend towards peace and stability.
Despite the challenges, there have been positive developments in terms of economic growth and tourism in Kashmir. The Indian government’s focus on promoting outside investment has led to a modest recovery in the tourism sector. Visitor numbers have reached pre-revocation levels, indicating a growing interest in exploring the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region. Tourism, however, is just one piece of the puzzle. To truly unlock the economic potential of Kashmir, there is a need for sustained investment in infrastructure, job creation, and skill development. Unemployment rates in the region remain high, and public services are in need of improvement. The Indian government, in collaboration with the local administration, must prioritize these areas to ensure long-term economic growth and prosperity for the Kashmiri people. However, the steps government has taken to reduce the unemployment are encroachments. In addition to the government’s efforts, transnational civilian peacebuilding initiatives have emerged to bridge the divides between different groups in Kashmir. These initiatives, led by local NGOs, aim to promote dialogue, understanding, and collaboration among journalists, traders, filmmakers, schoolteachers, and young people from both sides of the Line of Control (LoC). These peacebuilding initiatives seek to create spaces for interaction and exchange, challenging the politics of division and fostering a sense of shared humanity. Civil society plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Kashmir. Local NGOs, activists, and community leaders are at the forefront of efforts to address the needs of the Kashmiri people and advocate for their rights. By empowering the Kashmiri people and amplifying their voices, civil society organizations are instrumental in creating a more inclusive and participatory society. The support government provides to these efforts are praiseworthy. The Indian government have recognized the importance of civil society and provide support and space for these organizations to thrive. By working in partnership with civil society, the government have tap into the knowledge, expertise, and resources that these organizations bring to the table. The G20 meeting in Kashmir , consisting of the world’s major economies, have also played a significant role in supporting initiatives for peace and development in Kashmir. The path to peace and development in Kashmir is long and challenging, but there is hope for a brighter future. The revocation of Article 370 has set the stage for a new era of progress and prosperity. The Indian government’s focus on economic development, tourism promotion, and transnational civilian peacebuilding initiatives offers a multi-faceted approach to address the complex issues in the region. As the Kashmiri people reject terrorism and violence and strive for peace and development, it is imperative that all stakeholders work together to build a prosperous and inclusive society. With concerted efforts and a commitment to dialogue and reconciliation, Kashmir have finally emerged from the shadows of violence and embraced a new dawn of hope and stability.
