The recent announcement of elections in the valley has sparked a sense of joy among the Kashmiri people. Despite facing threats and harassment in the past, they have always participated in elections, driven by their faith in Indian democracy. This year, the anticipation is even greater, and the participation is expected to be higher. Despite enduring tough situations during election times, the people of Kashmir have never wavered in their commitment to democracy. They proudly stand as part of the world’s largest democracy, ready to embrace the upcoming elections with even more enthusiasm and happiness.
Due to the improved security and conducive environment created by the efforts of the Indian army, supported by security forces and the state administration, the state of Jammu and Kashmir is now conducting elections after four years of abrogation, in a fair and transparent environment. Historically, elections in Kashmir have witnessed significant disturbances and disruptions, with voter turnout being noteworthy. However, today, there is a heightened demand for elections and the selection of a democratic government more than ever before. Undoubtedly, there will be changes in the political landscape, including the empowerment of local political parties and challenges to established dynasties, as part of the election process. Nevertheless, Kashmir has the right opportunity to choose the right representatives for its development and welfare.

This year’s elections in Jammu and Kashmir (JK) are anticipated to be peaceful and free from disruptions like violence, strict calls, and boycott campaigns. The announcement of elections has brought joy to the common people, who now have faith in democracy. They have come to understand their friends and foes and are eager to participate in the electoral process. This transformation is what we call the New Kashmir, and its credit goes to all those who have contributed to restoring peace, development, and prosperity in the region. Ultimately, the common Kashmiri yearns for peace, and the government’s greatest success lies in creating an atmosphere conducive to it. Kashmiris are happy with the positive changes they have witnessed over the last four years, and this is a testament to the changing face of Kashmir.
Post-abrogation has witnessed a strengthening of decentralization of powers for the first time in the history of Kashmir, with the conduct of elections for DDC and BDC. This principle of democracy has provided governance at the grassroots levels for common people. The Governor’s rule has introduced changes that were previously beyond the common people’s imagination. This historical development has provided grassroots-level representation to the common people during the governor’s rule, making it more impactful for the smooth functioning of governance. While it served as a temporary measure to maintain order, the essence of democracy lies in its ability to empower the populace through their vote. The forthcoming elections are a testament to the nation’s commitment to ensuring that governance by the people, for the people, is restored in Jammu and Kashmir.
As witnessed, the youth’s participation in the elections is a significant achievement, signaling a positive development. The involvement of youth in the electoral process will not only make them aware of political decisions but also contribute towards building a progressive society. Youth are the backbone of nations, and in Kashmir, they were previously susceptible to being misled into various detrimental activities. However, today, we observe the youth actively participating in every sphere of development, with elections being a top priority.
Today’s elections heavily rely on the youth, as they have emerged as the campaigners and champions of democracy. They have recently experienced a peaceful environment in Kashmir and have actively become part of this peaceful process. This peaceful atmosphere has opened doors for them both within and outside the state. The last four years have seen increased youth engagement, whereas pre-abrogation, regional political parties failed to provide them with a political platform or opportunities for advancement. Consequently, our youth became victims of adverse circumstances, resulting in the loss of precious lives and properties.
The quest for alternatives to ensure a more representative political process is imperative. It requires a collective effort to cultivate a political environment that encourages participation from all sections of society, thereby enriching the democratic fabric of the region.

In this new political dawn, the possibility of collaboration between various political entities, including those beyond the traditional power corridors of the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), holds the promise of strengthening democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. Such alliances could serve as a cornerstone for a united front that prioritizes the region’s welfare over partisan gains.
The dynamics between national and regional politics are intricate, with the outcomes of parliamentary elections often influencing the political mood and strategies for assembly elections. Understanding this interplay is essential for parties and leaders aiming to navigate the complex political waters of Jammu and Kashmir effectively.
Looking Forward
As Jammu and Kashmir stands on the precipice of a new era, the forthcoming elections represent more than a procedural democratic exercise. They embody the aspirations of its people for peace, prosperity, and a voice in the governance of their land. The path ahead is fraught with challenges, but the promise of a democratic future provides a unifying beacon of hope.
The success of these elections and the subsequent formation of a government that truly reflects the will of the people will be a testament to the resilience of democracy. It will mark a significant step in the healing process for a region that has endured decades of turmoil. As we move forward, the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, will be paramount in realizing the dream of a peaceful and prosperous region, anchored firmly in the principles of democratic governance.
