National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of Parents’ active involvement in their child’s education and aims to establish a strong partnership between Parents, Teachers, and Schools.
As a parent or caregiver, You can support children’s learning even if You are not a trained Teacher or have basic literacy skills. . Remind Your child that they are still a school student, even if the school is closed. For a few minutes every day, starting with 20-30 minutes, sit with Your child and discuss what they were learning in school. Ask about the learning resources they have received, follow up with the Teacher if the child is not receiving learning materials. Request for printed materials in case the family does not have access to digital tools. This will help them feel positive about the future and ready to return back to school. On the basis of common observation, We can say that Children’s Education and Training is linked to School. In homes, parents’ actual participation in children’s educational activities is rare. This was fully realized during the lockdown. Children did not show much interest in learning online while staying at home. This experience proved that our home environment is not yet compatible for online learning and home schooling.
Now that there have been many internal and external engagements that keep children away from education and affect their morals, it has become very necessary for parents to participate fully in the process of education and training. Research has found that better performance of children and Access to higher grades is possible with the interest and cooperation of parents in educational activities. Therefore, in every home, there should be a permanent discipline of children and parents being associated with each other for education. That is, revival of the educational role of parents in every home. The educational role of parents refers to:
To get full familiarity with the educational activities of the children and to show interest.
Always having a positive attitude towards the educational needs of the children and trying to fulfill them.
To familiarize them with easy and difficult subjects.
Giving equal attention to learning languages apart from core subjects like science and mathematics.
How to behave in class, how to learn, how to understand, how to relate to friends and Teachers.
Viewing instructions and homework given by Teachers.
Checking remarks given by Teachers on homework and other activities.
To encourage reading and writing with interest at school and at home.
To foster a good environment for reading, writing, learning and understanding at home and to constantly monitor them. Research has also shown that if parents participate in their children’s educational activities at home, they develop seriousness and interest in education. For this reason, it becomes possible to listen carefully. Due to children’s interest in educational activities, parents establish a better relationship with Teachers. This relationship gradually becomes an educational relationship. They will ‘talk to Teachers about their children’s academic performance’ and spend all their meeting time ‘discussing concrete academic issues rather than complaining.
Whether it is helping children in their academic activities or discussing various issues with Teachers, moderation is essential in both cases. Over-Involvement and unnecessary interference in any matter can prove harmful.
School management has a very important role to play in ensuring the educational role of parents. They should be well aware of the fact that the scope of a school is generally considered to be limited to the four walls in which its building is located. As far as the real concept of education, the meaning of school and the effective performance of Teachers are concerned, its limits reach to the homes in which the students studying in the school live with their parents. The extent of the school is not limited to the specified land, but its extent covers the houses of the students. Therefore, just as the administration pays attention to the effective performance of the Teachers living in their school, in the same way in these houses.
The effectiveness of the educational and training system of any school is only possible with the deep commitment of Teachers and parents to the process of education and training. Organize’ and try to fulfill the roles of parents, Teachers at home with a sense of responsibility and integrity. Whether it is the success of students or the effective performance of a school, ‘Teachers in both cases’ are the triad of parents and children. The triangles must stay connected. If the parents consider the admission of the children to the school as everything and put all the responsibility of the education and training of the children on the Teachers, then the expected results will not be achieved. Even if you don’t focus on making parents a part of Your school, the results will be unpredictable.
If parents set unrealistic expectations for their children’s achievements, then children may not perform well academically in school.Researchers say that parents should not set too high goals for their children because high parental expectations can affect children’s academic performance.
According to a study, when parents have high expectations for their children’s academic achievement, their children tend to do better in school.
“We found a direct correlation between parents’ wishes and expectations and children’s outcomes,” the researchers said.
A study conducted by the American Psychological Association has shown that parental expectations have both positive and negative affects on children’s academic achievement.
Parents’ expectations can help improve children’s academic performance, excessive expectations can be as deadly as poison to children’s academic performance.
Children’s future depends on their parents. Academic orientation is one of the traits that parents can influence.
