Wheat Field Day at Faculty of Agriculture: Vice Chancellor Exhorts Augmenting Food Production through Rice-Wheat Rotation

Faculty of Agriculture held the Wheat Field Day on 12-06-2024. Prof. Nazir A. Ganai, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir inaugurated the event. The event was also attended by Prof. Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi Director Extension, and Prof. Haroon Rashid Naik Director Research. Dean FoA welcomed Hon’ble Vice Chancellor and briefed about the wheat programme at Faculty of Agriculture. Besides faculty members, a large number of farmers attended the event. The event was organized to showcase extra early maturing wheat varieties to farmers. In his address, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor congratulated the Division of Plant Breeding for breeding the early wheat varieties that can be harvested in last week of May, and exhorted upon the farmers to be a part of this university effort to popularize rice-wheat rotation for augmenting food production and increasing cropping intensity in Kashmir valley. He assured farmers of all possible support including seed availability and technology support for increasing farm output. He highlighted the role of University and Faculty of Agriculture in helping farmers of the region in achieving food and nutritional security and getting increasing returns. Prof. Ganai had a detailed visit of wheat nursery and complimented the breeders for maintaining the vast diversity of wheat germplasm including wild relatives and novel trait sources. A number of wheat and barley products were also showcased at the event that attracted widespread attention of farmers.
