Thousands of Shia Muslims Monday took out the Muharram procession in Srinagar after authorities allowed them for the consecutive second year to take out the procession. Authorities had approved the event, with organisers promising a quiet and disciplined Muharram march. A huge number of Shia Muslim mourners joined the procession, which began from Guru Bazaar and ended in Srinagar’s Dalgate area. The procession commemorates the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussain (AS), his family, and supporters at the hands of Yazid’s army in Iraq’s Karbala desert.
IGP Kashmir zone V. K. Birdi, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Bilal Mohudin and other officers of the civil administration monitored the Muharram procession. All parts of local community have applauded the administration’s decision to allow the 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar. It was also permitted last year, after more than 30 years since armed strife began in Jammu and Kashmir.
