Poverty often unfairly defames a person’s character, leading society to label them as untrustworthy or deceitful. When individuals lack the means to provide for themselves and their families, desperation can drive them to take extreme measures to stave off hunger. No one can bear to see their loved ones starve, and in times of need, borrowing money from friends, relatives, or neighbors becomes a necessity. However, when circumstances prevent timely repayment, the borrower’s honesty is questioned, and they are often stigmatized as dishonest. This tarnished reputation can make it even harder for them to seek help in the future.
It is essential to recognize that poverty, not a lack of integrity, is often the root cause of such situations. While there may be some who deceive, the majority simply struggle with insufficient resources to repay debts promptly. For instance, laborers who fail to find work on any given day face evenings of desperation. When they seek loans with promises of repayment the next day, and again fail to find work, they are quickly labeled as deceivers.
Such circumstances are a daily reality for many poor individuals. Poverty forces them into situations where their character is questioned, even though their actions are driven by necessity, not dishonesty. One of the greatest acts of compassion is to serve humanity, particularly those who are hungry, distressed, or grief-stricken. As one prayer leader in Sweden remarked during a Friday sermon, “To feed the poor or hungry is the dearest worship to Allah.”
Understanding the harsh realities of poverty should encourage us to respond with empathy and support, rather than judgment and condemnation. It is crucial to address the root causes of poverty and to recognize the dignity of those who struggle with it.
