1. Irfan Ahmad – Craftsman Benefiting from Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Scheme
Irfan Ahmad, a traditional woodcarver from Shopian, was struggling to sustain his craft in the face of declining demand. However, the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan scheme, aimed at supporting unorganized workers like artisans, provided Irfan with a pension plan, ensuring financial security for his future.
This security gave Irfan the confidence to revive his business. He started creating custom woodcarvings for both local buyers and tourists. His unique designs, rooted in Kashmiri tradition, gained popularity, and Irfan now trains young artisans to keep the craft alive. His story reflects how a government safety net can help artisans focus on their work, preserve their skills, and thrive in competitive markets.

2. Bilal Ahmad – Innovator and Entrepreneur
Bilal Ahmad, an innovator from Kulgam, has become a pioneer in the agricultural sector by introducing modern techniques for cultivating high-yield crops. His passion for research and technology led him to develop cost-effective machinery for local farmers, which has revolutionized farming practices in the region. Bilal’s invention, a low-cost apple grading machine, has been a game-changer for fruit growers, allowing them to reduce wastage and increase profits. His work has inspired others to embrace innovation in traditional sectors like agriculture.
3.Rubina Akhtar – Women’s Empowerment Advocate
Rubina Akhtar, from Kokernag, has been a champion for women’s empowerment in her community. As the founder of Women’s Voice, an NGO dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs and victims of domestic violence, Rubina has played a key role in creating a safe space for women to learn, grow, and become self-reliant. Through her workshops and training programs, she has empowered many women to start their own businesses, pursue education, and become financially independent.
4. Shahid Manzoor – Artist and Cultural Ambassador

Through his art, which often depicts the everyday life of Kashmiris, Shahid has gained recognition both locally and internationally. He has been a strong advocate for cultural preservation, organizing art workshops for young aspiring artists and collaborating with local artisans to keep traditional Kashmiri art forms alive. 5. Shazia Khan – Women’s Rights Advocate

In a conservative society, Shazia Khan established herself as a strong voice for women’s rights and empowerment in Anantnag. Growing up in a patriarchal society, Shazia experienced first-hand the challenges women face, from limited educational opportunities to societal restrictions on personal freedom. Instead of submitting to these restrictions, Shazia decided to fight back.
After completing her education, Shazia founded an NGO that focuses on women’s education, vocational training, and legal awareness. Her organization provides skill development programs to help women become financially independent. Whether it was learning to sew, bake or run a small business, Shazia’s efforts have given countless women the tools they need to take control of their lives.
Through her tireless dedication, Shazia has created a ripple effect in Anantnag, encouraging more women to follow their dreams, overcome barriers and become independent. Her activism has garnered attention and she has been invited to speak at numerous platforms across the country, sharing her vision for a more equal society.
Shazia’s journey is an inspiration to women across the globe, showing that with courage and determination, even the most entrenched social norms can be challenged and changed.
6.Sheema Nazir – Kashmir’s Cricketing Star
Sheema Nazir, a talented cricketer from Bijbehara, has become a household name in South Kashmir. As one of the few women to break into the male-dominated world of cricket in the region, Sheema has blazed a trail for other aspiring female athletes. Despite facing societal pressures and limited opportunities, she worked her way up to play at the national level. Sheema now trains young girls in cricket, encouraging them to pursue their dreams regardless of the challenges.
7. Noor Jahan – Women’s Self-Help Group Leader in Anantnag
Noor Jahan, a resident of Mattan, Anantnag, is a shining example of how self-help groups can change lives. A few years ago, Noor was a housewife with limited income and no avenues to support her family financially. She joined a women’s SHG formed under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), a central government scheme aimed at promoting self-employment in rural areas. Through the group, Noor learned tailoring and embroidery skills, which allowed her to start a small business from home.

Today, Noor leads her own SHG, consisting of 12 women who collaborate to create traditional Kashmiri garments and handicrafts. The group has not only helped them achieve financial independence but has also allowed them to contribute to their community by providing employment to other women. Noor’s story is a testament to the success of Modi’s schemes in empowering rural women.
After all, Anantnag district may be small, but it is home to individuals whose contributions have made a tremendous impact. These success stories serve as a reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, individuals can make a difference and inspire future generations to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals. Anantnag continues to produce talent that not only transforms their own lives but also contributes to the betterment of society and becomes a beacon of hope for all.
