Controller LMD reviews functioning of Legal Metrology Department

SRINAGAR : After assuming charge as Controller, Legal Metrology Department, J&K, Rajinder Singh Tara, today convened a comprehensive district wise review meeting regarding review of all the aspects related to consumer welfare and functioning of the department.
The meeting was attended by the Joint Controller Legal Metrology Kashmir, Deputy Controllers and all the Assistant Controllers of the districts.
A detailed overview of functioning of the department was undertaken and all the field officers were enjoined upon to work towards overall interest of the consumer welfare and prevent unfair trade practices.
The officers who attended the meeting highlighted the role of the department towards safeguarding the consumer rights by conducting regular inspections, registering of offences and imposing penalties under the provisions of Legal Metrology Act and rules.
The Controller was apprised of the ten online services being provided by the department through the J&K Single Window System as part of Business Reform Action Plan and Ease of Doing Business(EODB). The Controller was further informed that verification camps are being regularly conducted for standardisation of Weights and Measures throughout UT. Besides, consumer awareness camps are also being organized for creating awareness about the legal provisions and remedies available under the Legal Metrology Act.
The Controller, Legal Metrology, after reviewing the achievements, emphasised the importance of accuracy of weights and measures in commercial transactions for realising the exact value of money being paid by each consumer. He stressed the vital role and responsibility of Legal Metrology department in protecting consumer rights on day to day basis. He also took stock problems and bottlenecks faced by each of the district, assuring the officers that necessary steps will be taken to resolve them.
He further highlighted the importance of trade-wise and locality-wise updated data regarding the business establishments. He directed all the officers to complete the process within one month so that no trader is left uncovered from the reach of the department.
The field officers were directed to ensure the disposal of online applications within the time period as specified under J&K Public Service Guarantee Act. It was further emphasized that a proactive approach should be adopted and more activities like trader awareness camps, verification camps be organised in coordination with the trader associations so that each trader can understand the intricacies of the provisions of the law.
In addition, the roadmap for the upcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2025 was earmarked and the concerned officers were directed to redouble their efforts for effective market checking and enforcement/inspections along yatra route. The Assistant Controllers of Anantnag and Ganderbal were instructed to set up the dedicated consumer welfare cells in co-ordination with their respective district administrations.
