Chilai Kalan’ is the 40 Day period of Harsh winter .It is the coldest and harshest winter period in the Valley .The ‘Chilai Kalan starts on December 21 and ending on January 31. During the 40-day period, Kashmir remains in the grip of intense cold wave conditions. The night temperature usually remains many degrees below the freezing point.Chillai-Kalan is followed by a 20-day long Chillai-Khurd (small cold) that occurs between January 31 and February 19 and a 10-day long Chillai-Bachha (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 2.
