Kashmir is a land known for its beauty, but every winter, the Valley experiences something truly special – the arrival of Chillai Kalan. This 40-day period, which typically starts around December 21 and lasts until the end of January, is a significant part of Kashmiri culture and tradition. Chillai Kalan, which means “the Great Cold,” is not just a time of harsh weather but also a season that brings a unique charm to the valley.
During Chillai Kalan, the weather in Kashmir becomes extremely cold. Temperatures often drop below freezing, and heavy snowfall covers the mountains, trees, and homes, creating a winter wonderland. The Valley’s famous Dal Lake freezes, and the landscape turns into a beautiful sight, with snow-covered fields and rooftops. This time of year is special not only because of the cold but also because it gives Kashmir a sense of peace and quiet. The busy streets become calm, and people stay inside, wrapped in warm clothes, enjoying the warmth of their homes.
But Chillai Kalan is more than just cold weather. It is a period that holds deep cultural meaning for the people of Kashmir. It is during these 40 days that Kashmiri families gather around the warmth of their traditional fire, the “Bukhari,” to enjoy each other’s company. They drink hot “Kahwa” (a special Kashmiri tea) and share stories, creating memories that last a lifetime. The winter season also brings with it the chance to enjoy traditional Kashmiri foods like “Rogan Josh” and “Gushtaba,” which are perfect for keeping the body warm in the cold.
Chillai Kalan also plays a key role in the Valley’s agriculture. After this period of extreme cold, the soil becomes rich with moisture, which is good for the growth of crops in the coming seasons. This cycle of cold and warmth is a natural rhythm that supports the agricultural life in Kashmir, particularly in the spring when the famous saffron blooms, and the apple orchards start to blossom.
Apart from its cultural and agricultural importance, Chillai Kalan is also a time for reflection. The harsh cold teaches people to be patient, resilient, and prepared. It reminds them of the beauty of nature and the importance of family and community.
Though the cold of Chillai Kalan may be intense, it is a time that Kashmiris look forward to. It brings a special kind of beauty to the land, connects people to their traditions, and strengthens the bond between nature and humans. This period of winter is not just a test of endurance but also a celebration of life in its simplest, most enduring form.
