Heatwaves are becoming more common and intense, posing serious health risks. To stay safe, it’s important to understand how to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Firstly, staying hydrated is crucial. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol as they can dehydrate you. During a heatwave, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing can help your body stay cool. Light-colored clothes reflect heat better than dark ones.
It’s also important to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 11 AM and 4 PM. If you need to be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or cool areas. Using fans or air conditioning can help keep indoor temperatures comfortable. If you don’t have air conditioning, consider spending time in public places like libraries or shopping malls that are air-conditioned.
Keeping your living space cool is also essential. Close curtains or blinds to block out the sun, and use fans to circulate air. Eating smaller, lighter meals can help too, as large meals can increase body temperature.
Finally, check on vulnerable people, like the elderly, children, and those with health conditions. Simple steps can prevent heat-related problems and ensure everyone stays safe during a heatwave.
