As part of women empowerment, the equal participation of girls in all sports related activities at schools and other institutions is imperative. The sport is as important as academics, and as such, it is imperative for their overall personality development. The concern about gender, girls and physical education is because access and regular participation is a fundamental human right. Women were often perceived as being too weak for sports and it was often argued that sport was harmful to women’s health, particularly their reproductive health. Such stereotypes fuelled gender-based discrimination in physical education and in recreational and competitive sport, sporting organizations and sport media. However the tide has been taking a turn now and as far as sports activities are concerned, the youth – both boys as well as girls – are being engaged in sports and debates to ensure their positive development. The awareness camps on women empowerment and importance of the girl child are also being conducted through which youngsters including girls are benefitting. With regard to participation in sports, it challenges gender stereotypes and discrimination and can therefore be a vehicle to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
