Srinagar : The Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD) has introduced innovative eco-friendly measures for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2024, in collaboration with Swaaha Resource Management, their sustainability partner. This initiative underscores the commitment of both organizations to ensure a green, sustainable, and responsible pilgrimage for thousands of yatris.

HUDD is implementing comprehensive waste management strategies at each Yatra Base Camp, focusing on waste reduction, recycling, and composting. HUDD and Swaaha aim to promote sustainable procurement practices by sourcing eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics. Trained volunteers, or Yatra Mitras, are stationed at each base camp to educate pilgrims on proper waste management and the benefits of segregation. Pilgrims are encouraged to separate their waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories, streamlining waste management and facilitating recycling efforts.

Community engagement and environmental awareness are pivotal to this initiative. HUDD and Swaaha organize educational programs, art competitions, and interactive sessions to instill a sense of environmental responsibility among pilgrims and local communities. These programs encourage active participation in preserving the sanctity of the Amarnath Ji Yatra and promoting a culture of sustainability.

HUDD has also installed water ATMs along the yatra route, managed by Swaaha Resource Management, providing pilgrims with easy access to clean and safe drinking water. This initiative reduces the use of plastic water bottles, contributing to environmental conservation and promoting responsible tourism.

Pilgrims embarking on the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2024 receive sustainable kits curated by Swaaha, including biodegradable toiletries and reusable steel water bottles. These kits foster sustainable living practices among pilgrims, ensuring a cleaner pilgrimage experience.

Under the leadership of Mandeep Kaur, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, J&K, these eco-friendly innovations set a new benchmark for sustainable tourism practices in the region. By integrating environmental awareness into pilgrimage tourism management, HUDD demonstrates that responsible tourism can coexist harmoniously with religious practices. The positive impact of these initiatives will continue to unfold, leaving a lasting footprint of environmental responsibility and public engagement.
