According to officials, a written complaint was lodged on June 1, 2023, by a young woman, whose identity is being withheld alleging that she was sexually assaulted by Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, with the alleged involvement of his brother, Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat, also a resident of Kralpora.

Following the complaint, the Women Police Station Kupwara registered FIR No. 14/2023 and launched an investigation. During the probe, Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat was arrested but was later granted bail by the Hon’ble Court. However, the prime accused, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, remained absconding despite repeated efforts to trace him.

Given the seriousness of the charges, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to pursue the case. The SIT was led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Women Police Station, supervised by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DAR) Kupwara, and monitored directly by the SSP.

After sustained and coordinated efforts by the SIT, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat was apprehended on May 2, 2025. He is currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.

The prompt action by Kupwara Police has been welcomed by local residents, who have expressed appreciation for the efforts to ensure accountability. Police authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public safety.

“The District Police of Kupwara remains resolute in its mission to eliminate crime and ensure justice for victims,” an official statement said.(KB).
