Kupwara  : In a significant step towards building legal awareness among the public, Kupwara Police, in coordination with the Social Welfare Department, Rural Development Department (RDD), Education Department, and District Legal Services Authority Kupwara, organised an awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School Kalaroose.
The event was presided over by Additional Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Javed Ahmed, while other dignitaries present included Senior Prosecuting Officer Masroor Ahmed, Naib Tehsildar Kalaroos Munir Ahmed, and Block Medical Officer Kalaroos Dr Nazir Ahmed, Students and staff of the school, along with local residents, also participated actively in the programme.
During the programme, the participants were made aware of several important aspects of the newly introduced criminal laws, with particular emphasis on how these changes impact the common citizen. The speakers explained the concept of Zero FIR and e-FIR, which allow victims to file complaints without jurisdictional barriers and through online platforms, ensuring quick and hassle-free access to justice. The provisions of the Witness Protection Scheme were also elaborated upon, highlighting the steps taken by the government to safeguard witnesses from intimidation and harm. Special focus was given to the rights of women and children under the new legal provisions, particularly in cases related to domestic violence, sexual offences, and child protection, empowering them to seek timely legal recourse. The audience was also informed about victim compensation mechanisms, fast-track trials for specific offences, and measures for speedy investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Furthermore, participants were sensitised about the enhanced penalties for crimes against women, children, and other vulnerable sections, as well as new provisions for cybercrime, online harassment, and social media-related offences. The programme aimed to ensure that citizens are well-informed about their rights and responsibilities under the reformed legal framework.
Kupwara Police reiterates its commitment to promoting greater legal literacy in the community and will continue to conduct such awareness programmes in collaboration with civil and legal institutions. The initiative reflects the ongoing effort to empower citizens, particularly youth and women, with the knowledge needed to safeguard their rights and seek legal remedies.
