MeT Predicts Widespread Light To Moderate Rain, Snow Over J&K During Next 48 Hrs

SRINAGAR : The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has predicted isolated to widespread light to moderate rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 48 hours, officials said.

The MeT office said the weather will generally remain cloudy with the possibility of light rain and snow at isolated places on Sunday.

“There is a possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at most places, while a few higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall on March 3,” the MeT office said.

The weather will generally remain dry from March 4 to March 9.

Another spell of rain and snow is possible from March 10 to 12, it said.

It has also issued an advisory urging tourists/travellers/transporters to follow admin/traffic advisories during the period.

Farmers are advised to suspend irrigation and other farm operations till March 4.

There is also the possibility of landslides/rockfall/shooting stones at vulnerable places, the MeT office said, urging people to avoid sloppy slopes and avalanche-prone areas and follow DGRE’s avalanche warning/bulletin.

The day temperature has slightly increased by 5 to 8°C in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir during the past 24 hours.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded 12.0°C on Saturday, and this was normal for this period of the season, while Kukernag recorded 10.2°C, the highest among other weather stations in the valley.

The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday also witnessed an uptick of 0 to 3°C at many places, with Srinagar recording a low of 2.3°C, and this was 0.2°C below the average for the place during this period of the season.

The lowest minimum temperature recorded at Gulmarg was -7.5°C, and this was 4.3°C below normal for the ski resort of north Kashmir during this period of the season.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam had a low of -4.7°C, and this was 2.7°C below normal for the valley of shepherds, while Kupwara recorded a low of -1.2°C, and it was 2.2°C below normal for the frontier Kashmir north district.

In Jammu, the day temperature reached 23.4°C; Kathua, 24.0°C; and Katra 20.9°C recorded the previous day.

However, the minimum temperature was recorded 1 to 2°C below normal in all weather stations of the Jammu division, the MeT office said. (Agencies)
