On a pleasant day, the students and staff of Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Handwara embarked on an inspiring biological and educational tour to the University of Kashmir and the Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum, Lal Mandi, Srinagar. Departing from the school premises at 8:30 AM, the group safely returned home around 9 PM, carrying a trove of memories and valuable insights.The journey began with a visit to the SPS Museum, a treasure trove of cultural, historical, and zoological artifacts.
The museum’s rich collection of archeological finds, historical relics, and preserved zoological specimens like ostrich eggs and life-size animal models captured the students’ attention. This visit allowed them to appreciate the cultural and natural heritage of the UT, offering a glimpse into the past while sparking curiosity about the diversity of life.The group then proceeded to the University of Kashmir, where they were warmly welcomed by Prof. Sheikh Tajamul from Department of Bioresources. The visit commenced with a tour of the university’s botanical garden, home to an array of aromatic and medicinal plants. The students learned about the significance of these plants and their potential uses. Prof. Tajamul shared his life experiences, offering students a blend of botanical knowledge and personal inspiration.Next, the students visited the Center for Biodiversity and Taxonomy, where they were introduced to the Kash Herbarium, the largest herbarium in North India with a global reputation. Prof.Dr. Akhter Rasool, the herbarium’s in-charge, demonstrated the meticulous process of preparing and preserving plant specimens. He showcased plant samples that have been preserved for over a century, illustrating how these specimens help researchers study plant genetics, geographic distribution, and evolutionary changes.After an informative session, the group enjoyed lunch at the university cafeteria before heading to the Allama Iqbal Library. There, they explored the Iqbal Museum, which houses invaluable artifacts of historical and educational importance, including a preserved excavation of Mazhama. The students received a detailed introduction to the exhibits from a scholar, deepening their understanding of regional history.The final academic destination was the Department of Bio Resources, where the group was greeted by Prof. Dr. Manzoor , the department head and a native of Trehgam, Kupwara. Dr. Mir shared his remarkable journey from a humble background to becoming a top scientist, inspiring the students to pursue their dreams against all odds. His lecture on breast cancer, emphasizing early detection to save lives, was a highlight of the tour. The students were profoundly motivated by his personal story and professional achievements, which include international recognition and groundbreaking research in cancer.The day concluded with a visit to the Dargah Hazratbal, a place of spiritual significance. The students offered prayers, enjoyed tea, and purchased local delicacies like halwa and parathas before returning home.This tour was not just an academic excursion but an exceptional educational and motivational experience. It expanded the students’ knowledge of biology, culture, and history, while also inspiring them to strive for excellence in their personal and professional lives. The teachers, too, found the experience enriching, and it fostered a sense of pride and curiosity among all participants.The successful culmination of the tour marks a milestone in the educational journey of Govt.
