The Indian Army Provided a Lifeline to Burhan, a Child of Hopeless. Parents.
Some stories are very heart-wrenching and must be told because they have deep connections with society and can be inspirational. Not only do they help people realize their goals, but they also keep them aware of the other side of the story. It is unfortunate if we only know one side of the story and forget the real ones. Although I am not narrating stories, I believe people should know these realities for their benefit.
Burhan Malik from North Kashmir, showed immense courage by fighting a severe cardiac disease. Born on 31 August 2015, Burhan Malik resided in the serene town of Pattan, Kashmir. Burhan has been a student at Dagger Parivaar School since 08 August 2023, where he was embraced by a supportive community. This special school in Baramulla caters to the needs of specially-abled children, providing education for those with learning disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Autism, Down Syndrome, and Hearing & Speech impairment.
The Indian Army, as part of their noble service and despite their tough schedule, has been providing remarkable services throughout the crises in Kashmir. Most importantly, they have been offering humanitarian assistance to Kashmiris, supporting them shoulder to shoulder.
One such noble effort by the Indian Army is helping this child, an inspirational and essential story to read. This reveals real heroism and is a must-read.
In December 2023, 10-year-old Burhan Malik from Pattan, Kashmir, was diagnosed with a severe cardiac disease, adding another layer of challenge to his already difficult life. His parents, Mr. Abdul Ahad Malik and Mrs. Posha Akhter, hardworking individuals with limited income, faced the daunting prospect of arranging treatment for their beloved son.
On December 22, 2023, Burhan’s treatment began, setting in motion a series of events that would change his life. Dr. Tariq Rashid, a seasoned cardiologist in Srinagar, recommended a catheterization study followed by heart surgery, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to prevent fatal consequences. However, the cost was prohibitive for the Malik family.
Recognizing the lack of adequate facilities in Kashmir, high-ranking officers of the Indian Army coordinated to facilitate Burhan’s treatment at one of the best medical facilities in the country. He was transferred to the Research & Referral Hospital in Delhi. The Indrani Balan Foundation Group, closely associated with the Indian Army and Dagger Parivaar School, offered to support the cause. The Indian Army meticulously coordinated every aspect of Burhan’s treatment.
On February 21, 2024, Burhan and his family embarked on the challenging journey to Delhi, facing obstacles such as bad weather and landslides along the way. Despite these challenges, the Indian Army ensured the young boy was comfortably taken care of with precision and support. Burhan’s story is a testament to the Indian Army’s commitment to humanitarian assistance in Kashmir, showcasing their role in providing life-changing support to those in need.
The tireless efforts of the Indian Army in Kashmir, coordinating and liaising, ensured the timely arrival of Burhan Malik and his family at Jammu Railway Station. Upon their arrival at Delhi Railway Station, Burhan was received by Army personnel and taken to a guest room at the Research & Referral Hospital. On February 22, 2024, Burhan was admitted to the hospital, where essential tests were conducted.
The compassion and sincerity of the jawan accompanying Burhan from Kashmir were evident in the small but significant gestures. The jawan’s family brought home-cooked food for Burhan and his family during their hospital stay, reflecting the timeless values of compassion and gratitude.
On 29 February 2024, Burhan underwent a successful surgery, marking a significant milestone in his journey. With the expertise of the medical team and the unwavering support of his community, Burhan emerged from the hospital on 08 March 2024, ready to embrace a new chapter of life. Today, Burhan Malik stands as a testament to the power of resilience and community support. Despite the odds stacked against him, he continues to thrive, a beacon of hope for all who know his story. On 23 March 24, Burhan reached back safely at Baramulla where he was welcomed by one and all at Dagger Parivaar School. The Indian Army plays a multifaceted role in the fabric of Kashmiri society, extending beyond its traditional security functions to actively contribute to the region’s development and welfare, silently making a difference in the life of people of Kashmir.
Remembering the time when civil administration had collapsed and people were fed up with the circumstances, nobody was there to help the Kashmiri people except the Indian Army. The Army, as usual, took on the challenge and identified the enemy through their people-oriented initiatives. One such initiative is Burhan Malik, who is now alive and enjoying life with his parents. In stark contrast, there was Burhan Wani, who left behind a dark legacy.
The two Burhan’s originating from the same soil, are vastly different. One is the story of a savior of life, and the other is of a taker of life. In reflecting on these tales, it is crucial to identify who we aspire to be: helpful, beneficial contributors to society, not destructive forces.
