In a place like Kashmir, which has endured decades of suffering, the lack of awareness has been a potent tool for disseminating false propaganda and misleading the populace. Unlike more developed cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai, where access to diverse media sources is abundant, the majority of Kashmir’s population has long relied on Radio Kashmir (now AIR Srinagar), a public radio station operating in Srinagar in the past. While print media also played a role in disseminating information and creating awareness, reaching border areas like Macchil and Tangdar with newspapers is as rare as a hen’s teeth. Even today, the challenge persists. Personally, I’ve experienced the scarcity of national magazines and newspapers in my hometown, Kupwara, and throughout the outskirts of Srinagar city. In this climate of limited access to information, the establishment of a community radio station (CRS) by the Indian Army is not only commendable but also a beacon of hope for the youth residing in remote areas.
This innovative radio station symbolizes the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering community development and connectivity in Kashmir, serving as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive change in the region.
In the month of February 2021, The Indian Army launched the first-of-its-kind community radio station “Radio Chinar” in Sopore of Baramulla district in North Kashmir to bridge the gap between jawan and the local youth. This Community Radio Station was inaugurated by the then Army’s Core Commander Lt. Gen. B S Raju. The main aim of this new initiative is to get connected to the local youth directly and Radio has the ability to reach out to the people living in the remotest parts and make them aware of various schemes and programmes of the government. The pioneering Radio Chinar 90.4 FM stands as a testament to the Indian Army’s innovative approach to community engagement in North Kashmir. Situated in Mazbug, Sopore, it holds the distinction of being the first Community Radio Station established by the Indian Army. With a coverage radius extending up to 25 kilometres, Radio Chinar reaches key locations such as Handwara, Watlab, Sopore, Bandipora, Manasbal, Pattan, Delina, and Baramulla, effectively bridging communication gaps across the region. True to its namesake, which embodies the essence and pride of Kashmir, Radio Chinar has emerged as a true reflection of the region. Continuously adapting and enhancing its content, Radio Chinar has earned the moniker of ‘Har Dil Ki Dhadkan’ (the heartbeat of every heart), establishing a deep emotional connection with its listeners. This innovative radio station symbolizes the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering community development and connectivity in Kashmir, serving as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive change in the region. Through its diverse programming and inclusive approach, Radio Chinar continues to play a vital role in amplifying local voices, preserving culture, and promoting unity among the people of Kashmir.
The launch of the FM radio station not only enabled the Indian Army to establish a direct connection with grassroots communities but also signified a significant step towards understanding the importance of the younger generation—their desires, ambitions, and aspirations. It was a deliberate effort to provide a platform for youth to pursue their dreams. Radio Chinar has indeed played a pivotal role in supporting numerous young individuals in their quest for professional excellence, offering them a stage to exhibit their talents. I recall a personal anecdote that resonates with the impact of Radio Chinar. A friend of mine, a skilled sketch artist, had the opportunity to be interviewed at the station back in 2022. Following his visit, he reached out to me, expressing how his morale was significantly boosted and how he felt genuinely encouraged by the experience. In the subsequent weeks, he received further commissions for sketches, stage designs, and other projects, which not only provided him with financial empowerment but also reinforced his confidence in his abilities. His story is just one among many illustrating Radio Chinar’s role in nurturing the aspirations and dreams of Kashmiri youth.
This initiative by the Indian Army is now beginning to yield tangible results, with the youth of Sopore actively engaging with the army for the betterment of their community and the welfare of its residents. Formerly known for its association with militancy and unrest, the youth of Sopore and its surrounding areas are now collaborating hand-in-hand with the Indian Army, leveraging Radio Chinar as their platform to showcase their talents. The establishment of this CRS in Sopore was indeed a timely intervention, and the Indian Army’s approach to this endeavour has been notably distinct and impactful.
Building on the success of Radio Chinar in Sopore, the Indian Army has expanded its reach across the valley by launching another Community Radio Station (CRS) in Trehgam, Kupwara, near the Line of Control (LoC). This new station, once again named Radio Chinar, was inaugurated in November 2023, by the General Officer Commanding (GoC) 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, accompanied by Major General Girish Kalia, GoC 28 Infantry Division. The primary objective behind establishing this radio station is to connect with the border population, particularly the youth residing in these remote areas. Initially, Radio Chinar in Trehgam will have a broadcast radius of 10 kilometers. However, there are plans for gradual expansion to ensure that the population of Kupwara, especially those living near the LoC, can also access the station. This expansion of Radio Chinar exemplifies the Indian Army’s proactive approach to community engagement and security initiatives in Kashmir. By leveraging the power of radio communication, the army aims to not only foster connectivity and empowerment among the local population but also address security challenges by curbing illicit activities along the border regions. Through initiatives like Radio Chinar, the Indian Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare and safety of the people of Kashmir.
initiatives like Radio Chinar underscore the Indian Army’s commitment to extending a supportive and sympathetic hand to the youth of Kashmir. Through avenues such as community radio stations, academic scholarships, sports programs, and free medical camps, the army is not only fostering empowerment but also building bridges of trust and cooperation within the community, paving the way for a brighter future in the valley.
