Jaishankar, a seasoned diplomat with a stellar track record, assumed the role of Minister of External Affairs in 2019. His appointment was significant, as it signified the Modi government’s commitment to chart a new course in India’s foreign relations. Known for his intellect and experience, Jaishankar brought with him a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective on international affairs. One of the central tenets of India’s foreign policy under Jaishankar’s leadership is the pursuit of national interests. India has adopted a proactive approach to safeguard its interests in a rapidly changing world. In a multipolar global landscape, the country has redefined its priorities, encompassing economic growth, national security, and regional stability. A pragmatic approach Is another hallmark of India’s foreign policy. Rather than adhering to rigid ideological affiliations, India has focused on building strategic partnerships with a wide array of nations. This approach has allowed India to pursue its objectives effectively, unburdened by ideological constraints. One of the most striking features of India’s foreign policy under the Modi government is its unprecedented diplomatic outreach. India has been engaging with countries across the globe like never before. This shift in diplomatic strategy is not merely about expanding alliances, but also about securing economic opportunities for the country. It aligns with India’s aspiration to be a global economic powerhouse. The “Neighborhood First” policy has been a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy under Jaishankar. By cultivating strong ties with neighboring countries, India aims to foster regional stability and enhance trade relations. Initiatives like the “Act East Policy” and the “Indo-Pacific” vision highlight India’s desire to play a more prominent role in the Asia-Pacific region.
Furthermore, India’s foreign policy has been designed to ensure inclusive development. The Modi government is committed to leveraging India’s growing influence for the betterment of the global community. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, aimed at addressing climate change, and India’s participation in global peacekeeping missions underscore its commitment to global welfare.Diplomacy for development is another key aspect of India’s foreign policy. The government views diplomacy not merely as a tool to advance political interests, but also as a means to foster economic development and technological cooperation. This approach is well-exemplified by India’s efforts to attract foreign direct investment and forge partnerships for infrastructure development. In recent years, India has been increasingly assertive on the international stage. The country has been unapologetic in pursuing its national interests, which include standing up for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The “Make in India” campaign, for instance, seeks to reduce India’s dependence on imports, boost domestic manufacturing, and create jobs, thereby reinforcing India’s economic and strategic independence. India’s foreign policy, spearheaded by Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has also demonstrated its ability to handle complex international issues. Be it the border tensions with China or the situation in the Indian Ocean region, India has shown a strong and resolute stance in protecting its interests. India’s relationship with the United States has also grown stronger in recent years. The U.S.-India partnership is now characterized by cooperation in various areas, including defense, trade, and counterterrorism. This alignment of interests has strengthened India’s position in the global arena.
India’s strong foreign policy under the Modi government, is marked by a proactive and pragmatic approach to secure national interests, ensure inclusive development, and foster unprecedented diplomatic outreach. The government’s diplomacy for development and commitment to building strategic partnerships across the world exemplify its vision for India on the global stage. As the world continues to evolve, India’s foreign policy will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s destiny and its place in the international community.
