On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a significant event was organized at the Environmental Hall in Handwara. This event was spearheaded by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Handwara, reflecting a strong commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking within the district. The collaborative effort included the Department of Education, Private Schools Health Department, Police & other departments underscoring the importance of a multi-faceted approach to address this critical issue. The program aimed at raising awareness about the detrimental effects of drug abuse and promoting preventive measures to foster a drug-free society.
The event commenced with a welcome address by the Tehsildar Handwara Mr Zeeshan Khan. In his speech, he warmly welcomed the guests & students and emphasized the pivotal role that students can play in preventing drug abuse and trafficking. He urged the students to become ambassadors for Handwara, spreading the message of prevention and actively participating in creating a drug-free environment. His motivational words resonated with the young audience, setting a positive tone for the proceedings.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner Handwara Mr Aziz Ahmad Rather took the stage to highlight the importance of the event and the broader implications of drug abuse on society. He stressed the need for widespread awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse, both on individuals and the community. The Additional Deputy Commissioner underscored the necessity of augmenting preventive measures at both the domestic and societal levels. He advocated for a cooperative approach, involving all sections of society, to eliminate the menace of drug abuse. His appeal to parents was particularly poignant, urging them to maintain a close vigil on their children to prevent them from falling prey to drug-related issues. His speech emphasized the importance of community involvement in tackling drug abuse. He pointed out that every member of society has a role to play, from parents and teachers to local leaders and law enforcement. By working together, the community can create a supportive environment that discourages drug use and supports those who are struggling with addiction.
Practical advice on preventive measures was shared, focusing on both domestic and societal levels. Parents were encouraged to engage in open conversations with their children about the dangers of drugs, monitor their activities, and foster a supportive home environment. On a broader level, the need for robust community programs, school initiatives, and public health campaigns was highlighted. Following the speeches and presentations, a march was organized from the Environmental Hall to the Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) through Handwara Town. This march served as a powerful visual statement of the community’s commitment to fighting drug abuse and trafficking. Participants included students, teachers, health professionals, and local residents, all united in their resolve to spread the message of prevention and support. The march not only raised awareness among the participants but also attracted the attention of bystanders and passersby, further amplifying the impact of the event. Banners, placards, and slogans were used to communicate key messages about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free society.
The event highlighted the importance of awareness, education, and community involvement in preventing drug abuse. By equipping individuals with knowledge and creating a supportive environment, Handwara Administration is taking significant steps towards creating a drug-free society.
