Library automation refers to the use of computers and other technologies to minimize human intervention in the functioning of a library. It can be defined as “the. performance of an operation, a series of operations or a process by self-activating, self-controlling, or automatic means. Library services require a Series of works like acquiring, preparation and Organising documents of different types and available in many formats. The activities related to acquisition of documents , technical processing of acquired documents, circulation and Maintenance of processes documents are known as Housekeeping operations. In a traditional library system (managed manually ) these time consuming, labour intensive activities and routine clerical chores are performed slowly and expensively by library staff. Libraries all over the world , right from 1970s (with the advent of personal Computer) are increasingly attempting to automate some of thses activities for Minimising human clerical routines and there by optimising productivity and creativity of library staff. Library automation refers to the use of technology to streamline and enhance the management of library functions. This process involves the implementation of various software and hardware solutions to handle tasks such as cataloging, circulation, and patron management. The primary goal of library automation is to improve efficiency, accessibility, and overall user experience within a library setting.
One crucial component of library automation is the library management system (LMS). LMS is a comprehensive software application that facilitates the centralization of library operations. It typically includes modules for cataloging, circulation, acquisitions, and serials management. With LMS, librarians can efficiently organize, search, and retrieve information about library resources.
Cataloging is a fundamental aspect of library automation, involving the creation of a digital catalog that contains information about each item in the collection. This information includes details like title, author, publication date, and subject classification. Automated cataloging systems not only speed up the process of data entry but also provide users with powerful search capabilities, enabling them to locate resources quickly. Circulation management is another critical function automated by library systems. Automation allows for the tracking of borrowed items, due dates, and overdue fines. Self-checkout kiosks and RFID technology further enhance the circulation process, providing patrons with a seamless borrowing experience while reducing the workload on library staff. Acquisitions and serials management modules within LMS help librarians efficiently manage the procurement of new materials and subscriptions. These features automate the ordering, receiving, and tracking of library resources, ensuring that the collection stays up-to-date. Automation extends to patron management as well, with systems maintaining records of user information, borrowing history, and fines. This aids in personalized services, such as recommending relevant materials based on users’ preferences and past borrowing patterns. In addition to LMS, the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has become prevalent in library automation. RFID tags, affixed to library materials, enable quick and accurate identification of items. This technology enhances inventory management, speeds up the check-in/check-out process, and reduces the likelihood of errors. The integration of online catalogs and digital repositories further extends the reach of library services. Users can access the library’s resources remotely, searching and requesting materials from the comfort of their homes. E-books, audiobooks, and other digital content can be seamlessly incorporated into the library’s collection, providing patrons with a diverse range of resources. Moreover, data analytics plays a crucial role in library automation. Analyzing usage patterns, popular materials, and demographic information helps libraries make informed decisions about collection development and resource allocation. This data-driven approach ensures that libraries evolve to meet the changing needs of their user base.
In general, library automation, encompassing LMS, RFID technology, online catalogs, and data analytics, revolutionizes traditional library operations. It enhances efficiency, accessibility, and user experience, making libraries more dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of their communities. As technology continues to advance, libraries must adapt and embrace automation to remain relevant and provide valuable services to their patrons.
Library Automation is the generic term that denotes applications of information Communications Technologies (ICT) for performing manual operations in libraries of any type or size. Library Automation process can adopt three routes
1. A piecemeal approach, converting individual operations one at a time (for example installation of Cataloguing module alone to offer OPAC);
2. The process can work towards the integrated system progressively, using a ‘planned installation’ approach (for example installation of Member management module and Circulation modules after the Cataloguing module);
3. It can go directly for a fully integrated system to cover operations of all subsystems in the library.
The benefits of automation are numerous, including increased efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility. With automation, librarians can spend less time on manual tasks and more time serving patrons and providing valuable resources.

Automation is a Process of using the machineries for easily working and saving the human power and time . The main purpose of library Automation is to free the librarians and library staff and to allow them to contribute more meaningful to spread knowledge and information.
