Life, it is true, teaches us a lesson with every passing day; so is true with the seasons: be it spring or summer, autumn or winter; they too teach us lessons.
One winter night, when I was in deep sleep, I suddenly woke up. What I saw, once I opened the window of my room, was snow. Snow was falling, flake by flake, very gracefully. It had occupied every corner of the earth: ground, trees, roofs of the houses, streets and the mountain peaks. Everything seemed covered with a white blanket. Indeed a beautiful view/scene (not difficult to imagine by any Kashmiri).
I looked towards the sky and started observing very keenly and closely the falling snow flakes, of varying size (big and small), making a beautiful combination, falling very gracefully and at a slow pace. While I was observing this scene, a thought came to my mind: the Creator of this universe and of humanity is one. Among others, He has created the human beings; and all humans, essentially, are the same: no differences essentially.
However, there are differences of status and size (in the society we live in); some are financially rich, others poor, some are more capable and strong, others less skilled and weak: same like the snowflakes.
What came to my mind was the thought that we (humans) are His creation, and He has created us without any discrimination, but we have made the differences according to the social status. Allah has not divided us; our thinking has. If you are rich as compared to your brother, may Allah have given you enough money to test you: to check/ see whether you will help your brother or the needy one? Whether you’ll be grateful enough for His bounties. If a person is financially poor, that does not mean he is not fit for our society. In other words, poverty is not a sin, but we treat them as if they have committed a sin. It may be that a person is financially poor, but if he is a nice human being by heart and intentions, then that is what matters more. On the other hand, if a person is rich but does not have a kind heart, it makes him the poorest person. Hardships are part of life; they can come in the life of any person, be it rich or poor, weak or strong. It is these ups and downs, challenges and tests of life which make us understand the true meaning of life. What is important in such circumstances, is to have firm belief in the Creator. Also, we should not forget those (people/ well-wishers) who were with us during our hard days; sailing with us in the same boat.
For me, they are precious. Don’t ever lose them. The worst times of our lives teach us a lot of things, including being patient during the worst times and being loyal to the one who is suffering from the bad times. The best thing about the worst times is that you get to know the people who pretend that they are with you, but when you need them, they are nowhere to be found. Those who are there for you in your worst times are the real ones; they are the beautiful creatures who have a beautiful and sincere heart and thought. Do you know what I call them? I call them angels. They make your worst times easy; they never let you down; they always make their beautiful efforts to lift you up; they make you strong (whenever you need them) within a blink of an eye; they are there for you to help you. They are the real heroes who are always there for you. Never lose them. They are beautiful angels.

The color of snow (white) reminded me of our last dress (kafan/ shroud) which is also white. In the end, when we all die, we will be buried in the same soil with the same kafan;no matter if someone is poor or rich. One thing that will make us a good person/ human being after death are our deeds. Through our good deeds, people will remember us; they will not remember our status, our richness or poverty; but they will surely remember our kindness, our behavior, our approach. So be sincere, humble and kind. These are real jewels of life: more precious and valuable than anything else.
