Reflecting on the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, and the lives it claimed is a somber yet necessary exercise. Karnah, a picturesque valley tucked 170 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, boasts lush greenery and natural beauty. Yet, it also carries the memory of that fateful day when nature’s wrath struck mercilessly.
This earthquake, among the most tragic natural disasters in Karnah’s history, left an indelible mark on the region. It’s a region where the people, in their simplicity, have long depended on the Kashmir Valley for their basic necessities, given the harsh winters that isolate them from the rest of the world. Traditional practices like using firewood for heating and cooking prevail alongside modern amenities.
Karnah, derived from “KARANOO,” a mountain, or perhaps after Raja Karan Singh, as per local history, stands as a Tehsil between the borders of India and Pakistan. Its 42 villages, inhabited by a population of approximately 75,000, reflect the diversity of language and culture. The Sikh community adds to the rich tapestry of this place.
One can’t help but appreciate the resilience of the people of Karnah. Despite their isolation and geographical challenges, they have strived for education and development. A literacy rate of over 60%, along with educational institutions at various levels, showcases their commitment to knowledge.
The earthquake’s toll was heart-wrenching, with 300 lives lost, 2,000 injured, and 40,000 rendered homeless. The rebuilding process, while satisfactory, was a monumental task. The psychological scars still linger, with some still bedridden due to spinal cord injuries. Yet, Karnah’s people emerged from this tragedy with courage and unity, adapting to modernity while preserving their traditions.
Development is slowly but surely making its mark on Karnah, with progress seen in various sectors, from wood carving to infrastructure upgrades. However, the need for better connectivity, possibly through a tunnel, remains a hopeful solution.
As we remember the lives lost on that fateful day, let us pray for their eternal peace and for protection from such devastating earthquakes in the future. May Karnah continue to thrive, and its people find solace and prosperity in the midst of nature’s beauty and challenges.
