Opinion | The Indian Army’s Efforts for Peace and Development in Kashmir

The reality is simple: we are able to go about our daily lives because an Army jawan stands guard, braving the harshest conditions in the most vulnerable corners of Kashmir.

The Indian Army’s contribution to Kashmir is not a recent phenomenon; it dates back to 1947 when Pakistani Kabali raiders wreaked havoc in the region. It was the Indian Army that came to Kashmir’s rescue then, and it continues to play a crucial role even today. While most militaries across the world focus solely on defence and protecting their nations from external threats, the Indian Army has gone beyond this conventional role in Kashmir. From educational initiatives to infrastructure development, it has actively contributed to the region’s progress. Moreover, the Army has been instrumental in curbing terrorism and ensuring the safety of citizens. In the following paragraphs, I will highlight how the Indian Army has been a cornerstone of peace and development in the Valley.
There is no ambiguity in stating that the Indian Army has consistently protected and safeguarded the people of Kashmir over the years. However, what truly sets it apart from other militaries worldwide is its remarkable contribution to the region’s developmental projects. The Border Roads Organization (BRO), working under the Indian Army, has played a crucial role in enhancing connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir. Over the years, thousands of kilometers of roads and bridges have been constructed, significantly improving trade, commerce, and mobility in the region. Some notable infrastructure projects include the Bandipora-Gurez Road, constructed at a cost of ₹230.54 crore, the Mohura-Baaz Road at ₹134.99 crore, and the Tutmarigali-Kaiyan Bowl Road at ₹24.35 crore, all undertaken under Project Beacon in collaboration with the BRO. Additionally, the Gowalta village road in Uri, which was severely damaged during the 2014 floods, was reconstructed by the Indian Army last year. One of the most ambitious projects, the all-weather Zojila Tunnel, will provide year-round connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, significantly improving strategic and civilian mobility. Apart from large-scale infrastructure projects, the Indian Army has also undertaken community-focused development. In 2022, NDTV reported the construction of a 37-foot-long, six-foot-wide pedestrian bridge across the Mahu-Mangit stream in Ramban, named the ‘Friendship Bridge.’ This initiative eased the movement of locals and demonstrated the Army’s commitment to grassroots development. The list of roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects completed by the Indian Army in Kashmir is extensive. If I were to document every initiative undertaken, it would take more than ten articles to fully capture their immense contribution to the region’s progress.

Operation Sadbhavana has been a transformative initiative by the Indian Army, significantly improving the lives of people in Kashmir. Among its various efforts, the most impactful has been in the field of education. Under this program, the Indian Army has covered multiple domains, primarily focusing on providing financial assistance to marginalized and underprivileged students, establishing Goodwill Schools, organizing educational tours, and offering healthcare facilities in remote and border areas. The initiative has not only facilitated access to quality education but has also empowered many young Kashmiris to pursue higher studies in reputed institutions across the country. Currently, the Indian Army operates over 40 Army Goodwill Schools, benefiting more than 15,000 students annually. Additionally, thousands of scholarships and financial aid packages have been provided under this scheme, ensuring that students from economically weaker backgrounds do not miss out on academic opportunities. To name a few success stories, Tahir Abbas from Budgam, who was sponsored by the Indian Army from Class 6 to Class 12, is now pursuing his MBBS at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). Similarly, Shahid Altaf from Handwara, who received Army-sponsored education from Class 9 to Class 12, is currently studying BDS at Government Dental College, Srinagar. These are just a few examples of how Operation Sadbhavana has transformed lives, proving that the Indian Army’s contribution extends beyond security—it is shaping futures and fostering aspirations in Kashmir.

In terms of healthcare, the Indian Army frequently organizes free medical camps in border and rural areas to support the underprivileged sections of society. These camps provide crucial healthcare services, including general check-ups, specialized treatments, and free medicines. According to official reports, in the last five years alone, the Army has conducted over 500 medical camps across Jammu and Kashmir, benefiting thousands of residents in remote areas where healthcare facilities are scarce. To tackle the rising menace of drug addiction, the administration has been making efforts, but the Indian Army’s free sports tournaments have been an added advantage. These tournaments not only engage the youth in constructive activities but also foster a sense of discipline, teamwork, and fitness. Events like the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) for cricket, football tournaments, and snow festivals in Gulmarg have played a pivotal role in steering young minds away from substance abuse. In the tourism sector, the Army has actively promoted offbeat destinations, particularly border tourism, opening new economic avenues for the locals. Places like Gurez, Uri, Teetwal, Keran, and Macchil, once considered inaccessible, are now attracting tourists in large numbers due to the Indian Army’s efforts in ensuring security and infrastructure development. Notably, the annual Gurez Festival, organized with Army support, has put this stunning valley on the tourist map, leading to a 60% rise in visitor footfall in recent years.
Last but not least, the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Kashmir is unparalleled. It is because of the dedication and sacrifice of our soldiers at the borders that we sleep peacefully in our homes. Their presence ensures stability in a region that has long been vulnerable to external threats. I do not consider myself worthy of fully capturing their sacrifices in words—how can one quantify the price of a life laid down for the nation? To list their contributions in maintaining security and peace would be an understatement of their relentless efforts. The reality is simple: we are able to go about our daily lives because an Army jawan stands guard, braving the harshest conditions in the most vulnerable corners of Kashmir. Their silent yet resolute presence is the backbone of the valley’s peace, and for that, we owe them a debt of gratitude that words can never truly repay.
