The Indian Army’s role transcends beyond conventional military duties. it is deeply involved in humanitarian assistance & infrastructural Development in J&K
The Indian Army’s involvement in Kashmir is not only pivotal in terms of security but also significantly impacts socio-economic development, winning hearts and minds, and enhancing the quality of life for the local populace. The primary responsibility of the Indian Army in Kashmir is to maintain security and conduct counter-insurgency operations. Previously Kashmir has been a hotbed of insurgent activities. The Indian Army, through its dedicated counter-insurgency forces has been instrumental in neutralizing these threats. Operation All Out, launched in 2017, is a testament to the Army’s commitment to eradicating militancy from J&K. This comprehensive operation has led to significant successes, including the elimination of high-profile militants and the disruption of their networks. The Army’s presence and proactive operations have considerably reduced the frequency of terrorist attacks and restored a sense of normalcy to daily life in Kashmir. Given Kashmir’s sensitive geographical location, sharing borders with both Pakistan and China, the Indian Army plays a critical role in border security. The Line of Control (LoC) and the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) in the Siachen Glacier are manned by Army personnel who endure harsh weather conditions and treacherous terrains to maintain vigil.
The Army’s efforts in enforcing ceasefire agreements, especially the one brokered in February 2021, have been important in reducing cross-border skirmishes. These ceasefires not only prevent loss of life but also allow for socio-economic activities to resume in border areas, facilitating development and reducing the plight of the local population. The Indian Army’s role transcends beyond conventional military duties. it is deeply involved in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. J&K’s topography makes it susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and avalanches. In such scenarios, the Army’s swift response and logistical capabilities are indispensable. For instance, during the devastating floods in Kashmir in 2014, the Indian Army launched Operation Megh Rahat, rescuing thousands of stranded civilians, providing medical aid, and ensuring the distribution of essential supplies. Similarly, the Army’s presence in the Siachen ensures timely rescue operations for mountaineers and trekkers in distress.
One of the most commendable aspects of the Indian Army’s role in Kashmir is its commitment to developmental initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions. Through its Sadbhavana (Goodwill) projects, the Army has undertaken numerous initiatives in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and skill development. The Army has established schools and vocational training centers across Kashmir. These institutions not only provide quality education to children but also empower youth with skills necessary for gainful employment. The Army Goodwill Schools have gained a reputation for their high academic standards and holistic development approach. Medical camps organized by the Army provide much-needed healthcare services to remote and underserved areas. These camps offer free medical check-ups, treatments, and distribution of medicines. Additionally, the Army has facilitated the construction of healthcare infrastructure, ensuring better access to medical facilities for the local population.
The Indian Army’s efforts in constructing roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure have significantly improved connectivity and accessibility in Kashmir. These infrastructural projects are vital for economic development, enabling smoother movement of goods and people, thus fostering trade and commerce. The Indian Army’s engagement with local communities through various outreach programs has been pivotal in building trust and goodwill. Initiatives such as youth empowerment programs, sports events, and cultural exchanges have helped bridge the gap between the military and civilians, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect. The Indian Army’s role in Kashmir is multifaceted and indispensable. Its efforts in maintaining peace, countering insurgency, securing borders, and fostering development have been pivotal in stabilizing the situation. While challenges persist, the Army’s commitment to its duties and its initiatives aimed at winning hearts and minds continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Kashmir.
The Indian Army’s proactive and compassionate involvement lays a strong foundation for such an integrated approach, underscoring its critical role in the J&K’s ongoing journey towards peace and development.
