Winter starts on the 21st of December every year, or, I can say, starts with the hard period of chilai kalan. Chilai Kalan, a period of 40 days, ends with the month of January. In Kashmir, chillai kalan is considered the extreme cold period, as during these days the cold wave takes intensity and it is very difficult for the people to come out of their homes. During the period of chillai kalan, the lifestyle of the people of Kashmir changed. Most of us prioritise keeping our bodies warm, keeping our rooms and vehicles warm, and using warm clothes to avoid extreme cold waves.

In the past, winters were so harsh that heavy snowfall was recorded. The people used to use timber ovens and mud houses in remote villages. As most of the population in Kashmir resides in villages, the city is now becoming a business hub. The lifestyle of Kashmiris was different in the past as compared to the present.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” and the facilities we are enjoying or taking advantage of today are because of education. Education is the strongest weapon with which you can change the whole world. In the past, the literacy rate in Kashmir Valley was very low. With the passage of time, things have started to change. People start to run after educational institutions. The government administration focused on and promoted the education sector. Nowadays, we are doing well, and the education sector is developing. Today, individuals taking part in the education sector emphasize the need for concerned authorities to improve this sector so that everyone gets what they deserve.

Today we have facilities like hammams, floor matting is used as per the seasons, gas heaters, and a number of other facilities are available in Kashmir today, so the situation is quite better as compared to the past. Poverty is still an issue and concerning for us, as there are people who are earning very little after hardships like the labour class, etc., so we have to think of them and provide them with what we can do for them during hard times.

During the winter, people are getting weaker financially as there is more expenditure and less earning. People are used to store stock like essential home commodities and spend most of the time in their homes, as during the winter we have shorter days and longer nights due to the revolution of the sun.

How are seasons caused?

This universe has no definite end, and we are getting bizarre when we learn things from the astronomers. This universe has millions of galaxies; every galaxy has millions of stars; and this is out of our minds. The sun is in central focus, and around the sun there are planets that are revolving and rotating on their fixed paths. So the same is the case with our earth. It is special, as there is only one earth. There are different natural phenomena taking place, like the presence of air, water, giant water bodies, lofty mountains, great deserts, flying birds, fast-running animals, streamlined aerial transport, and many more.

Earth has two motions, one of which is rotation (rotation can be defined as the earth completing one rotation within the time period of 24 hours, which causes day and night during rotation; the part towards the sun has day and the part away from the sun has night or dark). The same earth revolves around the sun and completes one revolution within a time period of 365 days and 6 hours. We assume 6 hours and add them after every four years, and we observe leap years. The leap year is 366 days, the 6 hours of the previous four years assuming and adding one day in the month of February. So there are 29 days in February when there is a leap year.
