As India approaches the 78th anniversary of Infantry Day on October 27, the nation pauses to honor the valor of its infantry soldiers, whose indomitable spirit turned the tide in one of the most pivotal moments of post-independence history.

This day marks the anniversary of the Indian Army’s first major operation after independence—the daring airlift of troops to Srinagar in 1947 to repel Pakistani invaders from the Kashmir Valley.

It was a race against time that not only saved the city but also solidified India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir. 3 “Historical image of Indian soldiers disembarking at Srinagar airfield in 1947.” “LEFT” “SMALL”.

The story begins in the turbulent aftermath of India’s partition in August 1947. The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh, initially chose to remain independent. However, Pakistan, eyeing the strategically vital region, orchestrated an invasion using tribal militias backed by its regular forces.

On October 22, 1947, these raiders, known as Kabailis, crossed into Kashmir, committing atrocities as they advanced toward Srinagar. By October 26, they were on the outskirts of the city, threatening to overrun it.

Facing imminent collapse, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, formally joining India and requesting military assistance.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Defense Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel acted swiftly. The decision was made to airlift Indian troops to Srinagar, a bold move given the rudimentary airfield and the risks involved.

On the morning of October 27, 1947, the first contingent of the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, landed at the old Srinagar airfield aboard Dakota aircraft operated by the Royal Indian Air Force.

These soldiers, numbering around 300 initially, were the vanguard of what would become a full-scale defense operation. The landing was nothing short of miraculous. The airfield, a dusty strip surrounded by mountains, was unsecured and vulnerable to enemy fire.

Colonel Rai and his men immediately moved to engage the invaders at Baramulla, about 50 kilometers from Srinagar. In the fierce battle that ensued, Colonel Rai was killed in action, but his troops held the line, buying crucial time for reinforcements to arrive.

Over the next few days, more battalions were airlifted, eventually pushing back the Pakistani forces and securing the valley. This operation, codenamed “Operation Jak,” marked the Indian Army’s first post-independence engagement and highlighted the infantry’s role as the “Queen of the Battlefield”—the backbone that holds the front lines.

Infantry Day, observed annually on October 27, commemorates this historic event and pays tribute to the infantry’s enduring contributions to national security. The infantry, comprising over 400 battalions and making up nearly 80% of the Indian Army’s strength, has been instrumental in every conflict since—from the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971 to the Kargil conflict in 1999 and ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

It symbolizes the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of foot soldiers who operate in the harshest terrains, from the icy heights of Siachen to the dense jungles of the Northeast.

Celebrations of Infantry Day are marked by solemn ceremonies across India, particularly at the National War Memorial in New Delhi and in Srinagar. Wreath-laying ceremonies honor the fallen, while parades and weapon displays showcase the infantry’s modern capabilities.

In recent years, the Indian Army has reenacted the 1947 landing at Srinagar airfield, complete with vintage aircraft simulations, to educate younger generations about this chapter of history. 2 Last year, on the 77th Infantry Day, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the infantry’s evolution, highlighting its integration of advanced technologies like drones and AI while preserving its core ethos of close combat.

The day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. With the Line of Control still a flashpoint, the infantry remains vigilant, guarding India’s borders against potential threats. Veterans like those from the Sikh Regiment often share stories of camaraderie and heroism, inspiring recruits.

As one retired officer recounted in a recent interview, “That landing wasn’t just about saving Srinagar; it was about defending the idea of a united India.” 7 1 “Indian Army officers and dignitaries at an Infantry Day ceremony.” “LEFT” “SMALL”.

In 2025, with the theme likely focusing on “Adaptive Infantry in Modern Warfare,” events are expected to include virtual tributes, given the digital age’s influence on military outreach. Schools and communities across the country will host programs to foster patriotism, while the Army’s social media campaigns aim to humanize the soldiers’ stories.

Infantry Day is more than a military observance; it’s a national tribute to the unsung heroes who stand as the first line of defense. As India continues to modernize its armed forces, the legacy of that fateful landing in Srinagar endures, reminding us that true security is forged on the ground by those willing to face the fire.
