Winter in Kashmir is severe and unforgiving. Temperatures drop below freezing for weeks. Snow blocks roads and shortens days. In this reality, running coaching centers without proper heating is not a minor lapse. It is a serious failure. Students sit for long hours preparing for competitive exams. Cold classrooms drain energy, break concentration, and damage health. Learning suffers before it even begins.
You cannot expect students to perform when their hands are numb and their bodies shiver. Cold affects memory, focus, and stamina. Young students fall sick more often. Cough and fever spread fast in closed, unheated rooms. Parents then carry extra medical costs along with high coaching fees. Education turns into a physical burden instead of a mental pursuit.
Most coaching centers operate as full scale businesses. Fees are high. Schedules are tight. Promises of results are loud. Yet basic comfort is often missing. Warmth in winter is not a luxury in Kashmir. It is a basic requirement. When centers ignore heating, they ignore student welfare. That breaks trust between parents, students, and institutions.
Authorities issue winter advisories every year. Compliance remains uneven. Some centers install heaters. Many do not. Inspections are rare. Penalties are weak. This cycle repeats every winter. The absence of strict enforcement sends a clear message that student comfort is optional. That message is wrong and dangerous.
The government must make heating arrangements mandatory for all coaching centers. The rule should be clear and non negotiable. Every classroom must stay warm during teaching hours. Heating systems must be safe and functional. Power backup must be planned. Regular inspections must check compliance. Violations must bring fines and closures without delay.
Parents also have responsibility. You should ask about heating before enrolling your child. You should raise concerns when conditions are poor. Silence allows neglect to grow. Collective pressure can force change faster than warnings alone.
Kashmir’s students compete with peers across the country. They already face geographical and climatic challenges. Cold classrooms should not be added to that list. Education needs dignity. Warmth protects health and sharpens focus. Making heating mandatory is not charity. It is justice.
