For two families in Shopian, New Year’s Day is remembered not as a beginning, but as a day of loss. On January 1, 1996, Manzoor Ahmad Lone, son of Ghulam Mohammad Lone of Reban, was shot dead by terrorists. His killing left his family grieving at the very start of the year.

Five years later, on January 1, 2001, another life was lost to violence. Mohammad Ayoub Dar, son of Abdul Gani Dar from Panjer, was shot dead at the taxi stand in Shopian.
