The “Provisional Constitution Act” of POK effectively grants Islamabad veto power over any legislative move, rendering the local government a subordinate body. The response to peaceful protest has often been swift and harsh, raising serious international concern. Beneath the surface of the picturesque landscape lies a narrative of suppression that demands the world’s attention.

The scenic part of (PoK) boasts breath taking snow-capped peaks and lush green valleys, presenting a picturesque landscape. However, beneath this tranquil facade lies a complex and troubled history marked by longstanding political discontent, economic neglect, and an unyielding struggle for fundamental rights. This territory, referred to as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) represents a deeply contested geopolitical issue, encompassing the lives and aspirations of millions of people ensnared in an intricate web of military control and regional politics. Pakistan has constitutionally designates POK as a self-governing entity, the reality is far from it. The strings of power are widely understood to be pulled from Islamabad, with the Pakistani federal government exercising ultimate authority over critical matters like defence, foreign policy, and currency, and the Pakistani military maintaining a pervasive presence. The human cost of this protracted conflict is staggering and often reduced to impersonal numbers. The Statistics can be misleading, but personal stories bring the reality to life .The human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is characterized by systemic violations primarily targeting political dissent and minority viewpoints, particularly those advocating for independence or opposing the territory’s accession to Pakistan. The Pakistani state enforces strict political repression through constitutional measures, requiring all election candidates and public office holders to pledge loyalty to Pakistan, effectively barring pro-independence voices from the political process. Fundamental freedoms are severely curtailed; the state agencies conduct extensive surveillance, suppress independent media, and restrict freedoms of expression and association. Peaceful rallies, such as those by pro-independence groups or teachers protesting for pay hikes, are often met with police violence and mass arrests. More severe abuses include enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial killings. International bodies like Human Rights Watch and the UN OHCHR have documented these patterns, noting restrictions on religion, land rights, and a lack of accountability for security forces. While Pakistan’s government officially denies any violations, human rights organizations assert a persistent climate of fear and repression, maintained to suppress dissent and control the region. The recent waves of demonstrations are not spontaneous; they are the boiling over of long-simmering frustrations. The core issues are starkly economic and political. Protesters decry the severe shortage of electricity and water, the skyrocketing cost of living, and the rampant unemployment. A particularly potent grievance revolves around the perceived plunder of the region’s rich natural resources, such as hydroelectric power and minerals, by the federal government of Pakistan, with minimal royalties or benefits trickling down to the local population. The “Provisional Constitution Act” of Pok effectively grants Islamabad veto power over any legislative move, rendering the local government a subordinate body. The response to these peaceful protests has often been a heavy-handed one, leading to widespread allegations of human rights violations by the Pakistani army and paramilitary forces. Reports from local activists and international human rights organizations have documented a pattern of suppression. This includes the use of excessive force against demonstrators, arbitrary detentions of political activists and journalists, enforced disappearances of those voicing dissent, and severe restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly. The intimidating presence of security forces is a constant reminder of the limits of permissible discourse. The state’s strategy appears to be one of silencing criticism and crushing any movement that challenges its authority or questions the region’s contested status.

The term “Pakistan Occupied Kashmir” refers to territories occupied by Pakistan including Gilgit-Baltistan. Within these regions, significant human rights violations against minority communities and dissenters are extensively documented. The primary concern is not religious minorities in a traditional sense, as the population is overwhelmingly Muslim, but rather the systematic political and sectarian persecution of those who challenge the state’s authority or belong to minority Muslim sects. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the Shia community has historically faced targeted violence and discrimination, exacerbated by the presence of extremist groups. Across both regions, political activists, journalists, and voices advocating for independence or greater rights face severe repression, including enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, and curtailed freedoms of expression and assembly.

The verdant valley of this land thus hold a dual reality. This is a symbol of breath taking natural grandeur and a witness to a protracted human struggle. The protests are not merely about bread-and-butter issues; they are a cry for dignity, livelihood, prosperity and the basic rights enshrined in every international charter. The human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is characterized by systematic violations against political and sectarian minorities. Documented patterns reveal a consistent campaign against dissent. Hundreds of cases of enforced disappearances of political activists advocating for independence or rights have been recorded by human rights groups over decades. Arbitrary detention is rampant, with sedition and anti-terror laws used to incarcerate journalists and protesters. Freedom of expression and assembly are severely curtailed. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the Shia majority community has faced targeted violence, with sectarian attacks killing and injuring hundreds over years. Their political representation and land rights are systematically undermined. The state apparatus routinely employs violence to quell protests over economic and political grievances, which are frequent. Thus, while precise numbers are often suppressed, the statistical reality points to enduring, institutionalized persecution of those challenging Pakistan’s authority or belonging to minority Muslim sects, making the territory ( pok) a witness to a protracted struggle for fundamental rights.
