Kashmir’s youth are slowly reclaiming public spaces, cultural venues, and schools, gaining confidence and shaping their own future. Through sports, learning new skills, and community service, young people are getting involved in sports, discovering new opportunities, and showcasing their talent. This amalgam has become an important way for youth to connect with each other and the wider landscape of the Valley.

Sports is the most visible way young Kashmiris are reconnecting with society. Football leagues, volleyball tournaments, marathons, and fitness events are bringing youth together, transforming public spaces into hubs of participation, teamwork, and celebration.

A prominent example is the Drass Winter Carnival 2026 – Jashn-e-Fateh, organized in one of the coldest inhabited regions of the world. The carnival showcases men’s and women’s ice hockey, archery, tent pegging, and other winter sports, celebrating talent, opportunities and community spirit, it also highlights the government’s efforts to bring sports facilities and critical infrastructure even to remote areas. Beyond competition, it nurtures unity, hope, and pride among participants and local residents, reflecting the positive impact of structured sports initiatives.

Another important initiative is the 3rd phase of the Youth and Services Sports (YSS) Orientation-cum-Refresher Programme in Srinagar, focusing on Table Tennis and Badminton. The program enhanced the professional skills of YSS officials, introduced modern coaching techniques, and strengthened grassroots sports development. Programs like these ensure that youth not only play and compete but also receive professional guidance, creating sustainable pathways for athletic growth.

Across Kashmir, tournaments such as Kashmiruk Funkar and district-level competitions in Bandipora, Kupwara, Baramulla, Pulwama, Shopian, and Budgam provide coaching, infrastructure, and exposure. Special emphasis on girls’ participation empowers young women to engage confidently in public life. Sports cultivates discipline, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship, while providing a sense of belonging and achievement.

While sports engage youth physically and socially, skill development empowers them economically and professionally. Vocational hubs, coaching centers, and entrepreneurship programs equip youth with practical skills in IT, digital literacy, hospitality, tailoring, electrical trades, and soft skills like communication and leadership.

The Chinar YUVA Centre in Baramulla exemplifies this approach, providing mentorship, vocational training, and entrepreneurial guidance to youth from remote areas, including women. Programs under Mission Youth, skill missions, job fairs, and startup initiatives create structured pathways from learning to employment, allowing youth to pursue productive careers with confidence.

Sports and skills programs are closely linked. Talented athletes identified in football, volleyball, or ice hockey tournaments receive coaching, scholarships, and career guidance. Similarly, the YSS Refresher Programme strengthens coaching and training quality at the grassroots level, ensuring that sports opportunities translate into skill-building and professional growth. By integrating sports and skills, youth are equipped for meaningful participation in society and the economy which in turn bring sense of competitiveness and channelize their energy into right direction keeping away from drugs and unhealthy addictions.

Service connects sports and skills to the larger community. In Kashmir, service-oriented programs foster civic responsibility, social cohesion, and community pride. Educational initiatives, mentorship programs, and outreach activities provide youth with opportunities to contribute positively to their neighborhoods. Winter celebrations, such as the Drass Winter Carnival, also serve as platforms for community interaction, bringing youth, families, and local residents together in a spirit of participation and celebration.

Service-oriented engagement encourages youth to view progress as collective outcome, highlighting the importance of empathy, collaboration, and active citizenship. Through service, sports, and skills, young people develop a sense of belonging while contributing meaningfully to their communities.

Cultural platforms complement sports and skills, offering youth avenues for creative expression and identity-building. University festivals, art forums, music concerts, and winter celebrations in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Drass provide youth with opportunities to showcase talent, celebrate heritage, and engage socially.

Army-supported and community-driven youth festivals blend local traditions with modern expression, reinforcing social cohesion, brotherhood and collective joy. These events help restore public spaces as platforms for constructive participation, ensuring cultural continuity. Recently, I happened to pass by a village ground where a cricket match was taking place. I also noticed some army vehicles nearby. On asking the locals, I learned that the tournament was organized by the local army unit. There are many such examples across the Valley, which show how the army is not just protecting our borders but also building strong connections with communities through sports and other activities.

Programs such as Mission Youth, Khelo India, skill missions, job fairs, and startup initiatives provide structured pathways for youth to explore opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Coaching, mentoring, and guidance programs ensure that talent is nurtured systematically, creating clear routes to personal and professional development.

Sports, skills, and service are not just initiatives; they are practical instruments of integration and empowerment. Youth in Kashmir are reclaiming stadiums, streets, universities, and cultural halls, transforming public spaces into arenas of opportunity, competition, growth, and celebration. Through sports, youth gain confidence, discipline, and teamwork. Through skills, they achieve economic independence and professional growth. Through service, they develop civic responsibility and a sense of community. Initiatives such as the Drass Winter Carnival 2026 and the YSS Orientation-cum-Refresher Programme demonstrate the practical application of these tools, fostering talent, resilience, and unity.

Together, these programs are helping Kashmir’s youth move from potential to achievement, from participation to leadership, and from aspiration to opportunity shaping a future that is hopeful, vibrant, and inclusive.
