It addresses present challenges while anticipating future growth. By strengthening connectivity, promoting tourism, generating employment and embracing sustainable design, the project lays the foundation for a more confident and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir.
In a decision that holds long term significance for Jammu and Kashmir, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a major expansion of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport. The project, cleared on 24 February 2026, involves an estimated investment of Rs 1,677 crore and is being seen as one of the most important infrastructure pushes for the Valley in recent years.
For decades, Srinagar airport has served as the primary air gateway to Kashmir. While passenger traffic has steadily increased, especially after the revival of tourism and improved connectivity in recent years, infrastructure limitations have often led to congestion during peak seasons. The latest Cabinet decision directly addresses these constraints and prepares the airport for the future.
The approved expansion will result in a modern, spacious terminal complex with a total built up area of more than 71,000 square metres, including the existing structure. The new terminal is designed to handle around 2,900 passengers during peak hours, a substantial improvement over the present capacity. More importantly, the airport’s annual handling capacity will rise to nearly 10 million passengers, which is more than three times its earlier designed strength. This is not merely an upgrade in numbers. It is a strategic response to the rising demand for air travel to and from the Valley.
Along with the terminal expansion, the apron area will also be enlarged to accommodate up to 15 aircraft parking bays, including provision for wide body aircraft. This addition enhances operational flexibility and opens the door for future expansion of routes. Improved parking facilities for vehicles, better passenger amenities, upgraded security infrastructure and modern check in and baggage systems will collectively transform the travel experience.
What makes this project particularly noteworthy is the emphasis on sustainable and culturally sensitive design. The proposed terminal will incorporate local architectural elements that reflect Kashmir’s rich heritage, blending tradition with modernity. At the same time, the structure is expected to follow green building principles and aim for a high GRIHA rating, ensuring energy efficiency, water conservation and environmentally responsible construction. In a region celebrated for its natural beauty, this balanced approach deserves appreciation.
The broader implications of this expansion go far beyond aviation. Tourism remains one of the strongest pillars of Kashmir’s economy. Over the past few years, the Valley has witnessed record tourist arrivals. However, infrastructure bottlenecks, especially during peak travel seasons, have sometimes posed challenges. By significantly increasing passenger capacity, the airport expansion will ensure smoother arrivals and departures, encourage airlines to introduce more flights and potentially explore international connectivity in the future.
Improved connectivity also directly benefits students, patients, entrepreneurs and families who rely on air travel for education, healthcare and business. For many residents of Jammu and Kashmir, air transport is not a luxury but a necessity due to the region’s geography and weather conditions. A modern and efficient airport reduces travel stress and enhances overall mobility.
Economically, the project is expected to generate employment during the construction phase and create long term opportunities in airport operations, retail, hospitality and logistics. Infrastructure investments of this scale tend to attract allied development in surrounding areas, including hotels, transport services and commercial establishments. In this sense, the Cabinet decision acts as a catalyst for wider economic activity.
The Union Territory administration has welcomed the approval, noting that it aligns with the broader vision of strengthening infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Industry bodies and business associations have also described it as a landmark move that will instill investor confidence and support sustained growth. The message is clear that connectivity is the backbone of development, and this step reinforces that principle.
It is equally important to recognise the symbolic value of the decision. Major infrastructure projects signal stability, confidence and long term commitment. By allocating substantial funds for the expansion of Srinagar’s primary airport, the government has demonstrated its intent to integrate the region more deeply with national and global networks. Such measures contribute to economic integration and social progress.
For the people of Kashmir, the airport is often the first and last impression for visitors. A modern, efficient and culturally reflective terminal enhances that impression and showcases the Valley’s readiness to welcome the world. The expansion therefore carries both practical and emotional significance.
The Cabinet approval for the expansion of Srinagar International Airport is a forward looking decision rooted in realism and ambition. It addresses present challenges while anticipating future growth. By strengthening connectivity, promoting tourism, generating employment and embracing sustainable design, the project lays the foundation for a more confident and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir. The decision rightly deserves praise as a milestone in the region’s journey towards progress and opportunity.
