Specially-abled girls in Kashmir face many challenges in their daily lives. These challenges relate to health, education, safety, confidence, and acceptance. In the past, especially abled girls had to struggle more because they faced both disability and gender-related discrimination. However, over the years, the government and social organizations have tried to improve their lives. Today, there are many schemes to help these girls lead a dignified life full of hope and equality.
Beingspecially-abled means facing difficulties in physical, mental, or learning abilities while performing any activity. This includes difficulties in movement, hearing, seeing, speaking, or learning. Specially-abled girls need special care. With proper assistance, they can study, work, and live happily like other people.
The purpose of these programs is very simple. They aim to ensure that girls with disabilities receive access to education, health care, economic assistance, and a safe environment. Such support helps them become confident, competent, and self reliant citizens.
In Kashmir, awareness about disability rights has gradually increased in recent years. Parents are more willing to send their especially abled daughters to school and skill training centres. Government programs have contributed significantly to this positive development.
Education is the most powerful weapon for positive change. Several initiatives focus onhelping girls with disabilities continue their education.Under the Inclusive Education initiative, schools are encouraged to admit children with disabled disabilities. Special teachers, free textbooks, uniforms, and educational materials are provided to support them. Ramps and toilets are constructed to make schools accessible to girls with physical disabilities.
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program assists girls with disabilities in primary education. These girls are given free educationand support services. The girlsattend school every day and learn in a supportive environment.
For secondary education, the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan programassists girls with disabilities at the higher school level. Scholarships and educational support are given to the girls with disabilities.
Another important initiative is the Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage program, which supports girls from grades 9 to 12. It provides transport allowances, reading aids, and hostel facilities when required.
Many girls with disabilities quit school due to financial problems. Scholarships ease this problem. The Disability Scholarship Scheme provides economic support to girls belonging to poor families. This money is spent on books, uniforms, transport, and other educational requirements. It encourages parents to send their daughters to school rather than keeping them at home.
In addition to these benefits, Merit-based scholarships are also offered to students who perform well academically. This encourages them to perform well and have confidence in themselves.
Health is the most important aspect for specially- abled girls. Most initiatives are based on providing them with health assistance. The government hospitals also offer free medical check-ups, disability certificates, and assistive devices that make life easier for people. These devices include wheelchairs, hearing devices, walking sticks, etc.
The Department of Social Welfare in Jammu and Kashmir works in coordination with health department officials to provide timely relief. Health camps are also set up in rural areas so that girls do not have to travel long distances.Early medical support helps girls manage better and lead more active lives.
Education by itself is not sufficient for long-term independence. Skill development plays an important role in making specially-abled girls self-reliant and earn a living. Skill development centers are established to train girls in tailoring, embroidery, computer basics, beauty services, and handicrafts. These skills are selected so that girls can earn in the safety of their homes or in safe environments.
Special training programs also include confidence building, communication, and self-care awareness. This helps the girls face the world with confidence and self-respect. Some programs also help the girls with their business ideas by providing them with financial assistance. This enables girls to start their own businesses and sustain their families.
Financial security provides peace of mind for both the girls and their families. Disability pensions are provided to individuals who are unable to work due to severe conditions. This monthly assistance caters to the girls’ needs and provides a measure of financial security.
Other forms of assistance include providing transport concessions to girls on buses and other modes of public transport, which enable the girls to get to school, the hospital, and training institutions. The girls are also provided with free legal aid to ensure that their rights and dignity are observed.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir plays a crucial role inplanning and executing these programs. Some offices help girls and their families in applying for these benefits and guide them through the process.
However, some challengesremain. There is a lack of awareness in some distant regions, and the paperwork is time-consuming, which may act as a deterrent.More awareness programs should be organized to make sure that families are aware of the help that is available.
If society treats girls with disabilitieswith respect and care, then positive changes will take place. Every girl should get a chance to learn, grow, and dream.
By providing education, health, training, and funding, the girls are heading towards a bright future. Small steps, effective policies, and positive mindsets can bring about a huge difference. The specially-abled girls in Kashmir can live with dignity, confidence, and independence with constant support and awareness. They are not weak. They are strong, capable, and full of potential with the right support.
